Has the Taylor Made R7 Tour Driver become old news?

Since several top tier PGA tour players have put a 460cc size head driver into play, it seems the Taylor Made R7 Tour driver has lost some of its appeal. Additionally, it looks like the R7 commands less dollars on auction sites.

What's your opinion on this topic?

i totally agree....i in fact put one of the solidest R7 tours on a monitor against a retail comp 460 head the other day and the ball speed was 8-12 mph hotter off of the retail comp face than the tour R7 TP deepface.....i dont care for the R7 anywasy i have beed a 510TP 10.5 tour head fan forever and now u can see whats in the bag and isnt coming out for a long time ........

i had been using a r7 tp since last march & absoulutly love the driver, it was like pulling teeth to take out my r510 tp out of the bag, but was happy i did because the r7 tp was that much better for me, until i started using the r7 tp shallow face, IMO this was the best r7 tp made. but i like every other tour player jumped on the big head band wagon. i just got 2 r5 dual tp drivers & absoulutly love them.

The domestic R7 TP Tours never had any sizzle to begin with. The truth came out early with these "Tour" drivers. We don't drink the KoolAid.

truthfully they shoudl have waited to release it until the merchandise show this year. would have put those big head drivers out. they just rushed it liek they always do.

they shoudl do what titleist does and wait until everybody releases their new stuff then BAM, heres a better club. its human nature. people want whats new.

we all my think its old news, but i dont see that many guys using a r5 dual tp out there. the r7 is the most used driver on tour, with tm staffers & non tm staffers.

Yea true, but if any other company put out tee up money like TM then they would have a hefty share in the driver market. TM is oversaturated in the business and I believe retail products are not as high quality as other brands. MHO though.

also, close to half of the TM staffers still have the R500 series models in play...

very true, a lot of players using the original R500 & xd drivers, even a holy grail in steve lowerys bag!

The R7 might seem like old news by TM standards but the numbers clearly show it is the most played driver on the PGA tour.

We're not talking struggling mini tour players. These guys are playing for hundreds of thousands of dollars every week. I'm sure most of them use what works regardless of tee up money

I think we can look forward to drivers no smaller than 400 cc with two sub-trends; adjustable weights and 460 cc heads. 460 cc heads have become relatively inexpensive to produce and very forgiving to play. Those with more specialized requirements will continue to seek out drvers like the R7.

I've talked a couple of buddies into buying the Ping G2 460 and the Mizuno MP-001 460 with GD YS series shafts (6 for one, a 7 for the other) and they both couldn't be happier. Relatively inexpensive investments, too.

Uhhh, make that three sub-trends. Forgot to mention composite or multi material drivers. This tech will become more prevalent with large heads allowing manufacturers to move more weight around to control CG location. Emerging nanotechnology will fuel this trend in near future.

the MP001 & G2 arent bad drivers for the price at all, but for that price IMO i think the reg. R5 dual is a better feeling, better quality, & longer for the extra 30 bucks although i have not hit a stock r5 dual i have only hit the r5 dual tp's that i am currently using. the only driver that i have heard praise about is a G2 400cc Tour driver.

I don't disagree with you re the R5. It's BIG and forgiving. The R5 N is still a bit closed. Also, in this market, the R5 retails for more than the Mizuno or the Ping, the main reason my friends made the choices they did.

I'm waiting for the retail R5 TP. That should be a good one!

Until last week, it would have taken an act from the Almighty to get my R7 tour out of my bag. That was until a coworker of mine (also an R7 disciple) picked up one of Maru's backup Tourstage (the newest model 325cc version) with a Tour-AD 65-X in it. He pounded that thing time after time into 30mph+ winds with no ballooning and less curvature than I had ever seen. Not only that, but he said the feedback of the Tourstage as compared to the R7 was night and day. He is as long or longer with the Tourstage. Consequently, I followed a similar path and picked up a J33R Tour. It is easily everything the R7 Tour WAS (sold it a couple of days ago!) and more. For those afraid to leave the R7 nest, be assured that there are choices out there worth making the switch to. Just my .02 . . .

Taylor Made does not put up the most tee up money. Callaway puts up the most tee money. Titleist and Taylor put up $1000 less a week than Callaway.
