bumpNrun24
Yes, but I also believe it is so Gauge Japan can market their stuff in the US without all of the confusion between THAT GUY and the REAL product.

the1stunner
Yes, but I also believe it is so Gauge Japan can market their stuff in the US without all of the confusion between THAT GUY and the REAL product. I love import stuff as much as the next tsger, but I thought David Whitlam was the guy who got ripped off. Before all y'all get riled up, I think this is the most beautiful putter ever made. I have only heard one side of the story from a friend of mine who is good friends with Whitlam & IMO it sounds like David got the short end of the deal. I understand that all is fair in love, war & international business. But without David Whitlam would there be a Gauge japan?

I understand that all is fair in love, war & international business. But without David Whitlam would there be a Gauge japan? Absolutely, . A 500pc run of putters by David was made and the aluinsers and weight were extremely bad and D.W wouldn't fix or reimburse the error. GD Japan found a new Japanese manufacture who got the aluinsers flush even to the touch and that is what you now know as the original Gauge Design Japan. D.W illegally took the Pacific Golf Supply investment and registered the company in the U.S as the owner when he owned 0%. He then registered Gauge Design under PGS which Hirota was set to be the U.S president as he owned half of PGS with GD japan. GD Japan owns all of PGS now. Anyway to make a long story short, they should be going to court anytime now. Do a search on the topic for more info.
bumpNrun24
Well said Chris.....I can always count on a good tempered logical response from you. IMO Whitlam's stuff is not made with as much precision as Gauge Japan. Most stuff compared to anything Japanese is not made with as much precision now that I think of it. They take good things and make them better!!
+TourSpecGolfer
Thanks for your support, Some people just dont believe it, It has always been my understanding that George Takei owned Pacific Golf Supply and that DW was an employee, George covered all expenses and had DW get certain clubs manufactured in the USA, which were shipped to Japan and sold by Gauge Design Japan (GDJ). Somewhere in the shuffle, DW let PGS' corporate status to be suspended and attempted to have trademarks transferred. he also started claiming he founded Gauge. After GDJ filed the lawsuit against DW just recently, he took down the open letter off his website and his attorney is now discussing settlement with GDJ. DW apparently has some IRS tax liens against him and does not have money. Gauge Design will be one brand again soon!

My friend told me that DW was starting Gauge & when he returned to japan, the Gauge name was stolen from him, they (Gauge Japan) had the rights to GD in japan & even signed players on the japan tour. Now that he has the lawsuit & IRS tax liens against him, DW will have to mill his way out. I was wondering why every GDJ putter I have ever tried is better than the american models I tried. Seems like DW is a :atsg_smilie_circleL: Edited March 30, 2006 by the1stunner
matt411
I have putters from both companies and they are all top quality. Before the new face styles on the GDJ putters, I actually preferred the roll from USGD. GDJ used to flat mill the faces which I never liked too much. +TourSpecGolfer
When will the G-field brand emerge in the US ? Should be sometime in May, They are now structuring the corporation and establishing a headquarters among a million other things. I have putters from both companies and they are all top quality. Before the new face styles on the GDJ putters, I actually preferred the roll from USGD. GDJ used to flat mill the faces which I never liked too much. Gauge Japan has always had Knife, Swirl and flat face milling marks. Before you buy your next GDJ putter match it with your course conditions and stroke. Flat Mill is for pro speed green sensitivity and a sound putting stroke, the norm in Japan. Perhaps you should have played the SM490A with Knife marks back then instead as I assume you like the softer feel and don't keep the sole of your putter close enough to the ground during your stroke. To get the best roll with the flat milled putter faces try putting quarters on a smooth flat floor for practice. That said you are correct and no face design on the market can come close to the Original 3RTNC and the new Premium 303 insert.
