I can't believe it! I played Bay Hill today for the first time. They had just put down granular fertilizer on the greens. Before the round, I wiped down my Scotty Cameron Circa 62 with the silicon treated cloth like I always do. And, I cleaned it off after each hole and put back in the headcover. On about the 4th hole I noticed a couple of spots on the sole the size of the fertilizer granules. Sure enough, I couldn't get the fertilizer off quick enough, it ate through the black oxide finish to the metal. No matter what I did, it continued through the round with more marks.

I don't know who to be more disappointed with, Bay Hill or Scotty Cameron! :tsg_smilie_sad:

I had that happen last year while in Japan to a Black Studio I had had for a couple of years. Mine wasn't from the fertilizer just the very humid weather. I too was very diligent about wiping it down, but in Japan, during the summer its hot and very, very humid. I was there for three weeks and played four times, twice down in Kyushu area and then up in Chiba and one other place which is escaping my memory. When I wasn't playing I kept my clubs in the Golf Glove travel bag. Upon arriving back in the states, I discovered rust spots all over it. Its too bad. When Scotty first came out with their restoration department I wanted to send it in and have that new (new at the time) black finish put on but they said they didn't do that one. Those finishes it seems obviously aren't made to be played, just displayed.

Yup i feel ya!

Had the fertilizer thing happen to me multiple times. since then i gave up on black finishes.

I have also had irons rust on plane flights. I play a round, the head is still a tad wet, i get on the plane and when i land some rust monster got it in cargo.

a few tips for non black finishes are using vinegar to remove the rust, dry it off well and spray it with WD-40.
