changing lie and shafts

I am going to change my lie angle to 2 degree upright and replace my DS s300 and go 1 inch longer (per club fitter advice). What I am wondering When should I get my lie angle changed before or after I change the shafts? Any suggestions on what type of shafts are comparable to my DS s300? I would like a little lower ball flight, any additional information would be helpful.

Lengthen or shortening the club will affect total weight, swingweight, flex and lie. You can either: (1) change the lie angle before pulling the shaft; or (2) install new shaft, adjust the lie angle to 2* upright and butt trim to desire length.

Here is an interesting point. Anatomically, shorter persons have shorter arms and vice versa (of course there are freaks). If you have been playing with shorter clubs for years, you may have had adjusted and be accustomed to bending over more or having a wider stand or both. Adding 1 inch means you would have to change your current swing set up and swing path, etc. Before replacing the S300, I'd pull the grip and add either a steel or an aluminum shaft extender, adjust the lie and butt trim to desire length. Once you are comfortable hitting with a longer club and after changing the swing set up and still want lower ball flight, you can start searching for new shafts. This alternative is much cheaper than paying for a new set of irons, have the old ones pulled, re-shaft, adjust the lie, butt trim, re-grip, etc. which in the end you may not be happy with.

when I went to the club fitter I had better and more consistent contact when I had the 1" longer shaft, do you think I should still use extensions? Thanks for the input. He also recommended a shaft (True temper) that only club makers can get, True? I dont remember what the name is. any ideas?

My first choice would be to buy a brand new set custom built to my specs.

My second choice would be to adjust the Loft/Lie/Length/Swing Weight/Grip Size of my current set.

My 3rd choice would be to only bend the angles and add shaft extenders.

After the fitting you know your specs better then you can pick or choose based on what your budget allows you to do.

Shaft Analysis Report is something you didn't mention, Did your fitter have you hit different flex's and shafts? You will notice there is sometimes a couple in the bunch that tighten dispersion, give greater ball speeds etc.. Picking the right shaft is vita.

I suggest trying these 3: NS1150, Black Gold, Tour Concept, Dynalite 300SL in both stiff and regulars on the launch monitor and have him display the ball plot in different colors so you see what did what for you. Hit at least 5-7 shots with each setup.

Your club maker will bend the lie after the shafts are installed. Also note that making the lie more upright will aid in getting the ball higher.

Good luck, I hope you reach club nirvana soon!
