4 wood...

hey everyone, kind of wanted everyone's opinion on having a 4 wood in the bag. i was actually in the market for a 3 wood when i found i could get a g-field 4 wood head for a decent price. looking at the specs its a 16* head rather than a 14* head. it does play shorter than the 3 wood...so i'm assuming its easier to control. guess i'm just wondering if its worth it for me to pick up this 4 wood head...or should i just continue my search for a 3 wood. oh btw...i have a 17* hybrid at 40", steel and a 21* hybrid at 39", steel.

I had th G-field 4 wood and it wasn't long enough for me. I opted for a 13.5 3 wood. I can use it from the tee and deck. The 4 wood was too shallow and not great off the tee. It also left a distance gap I needed to fill. Considering your hybrid I would go for the 3 wood.

i was in the same boat as you. no doubt at the time i got my maruman shuttle 3 wood and the way i was hitting it at the time i wished for a 5 wood. i eventually got used to the 3 and when i hit it square it just shines.

3 wood..... gives you more options off the tee (without sacrificing that much distance).... 4 wood is not comparable and the benefits from the fairway are not that much better

My take is a bit different,

I hit 4 woods much better than 3 woods due to shape and loft. The 4 woods seem easier to get off the turf and in my experience fly even better if you play them at a shorter than normal length.

Yes the 3 is longer but the 4 is better for my personal score.

I would go for the 3 wood and 5 wood combo. I also obtained recently from a member here, a G-Field 4 wood with a red board playing at 42 inches. It is at least 30 yards shorter than my Fourteen 3 wood both off the tee and off the deck. If you have 'space', carry a 3 and 5 wood plus a 22 to 24 degree hybrid. This should meeting 95% of your need.

Having said that, carry a 4 wood f you have problem hitting a 43 inch 3 wood off the turf.

Also id like to mention if you have trouble hitting a 3 wood off the deck, try the 2007 Mizuno JPX and the new ONOFF fairways. both get up easy with no stress.

If you want a 3 wood to hit off the tee, nothing beats the Epon 13.5 driving spoon.

I will second the Epon 13.5* - great for a long fairway finder. off the tee.. and I find it easy to hit off the turf too (haven't hit a bad shot from the turf yet)...maybe its the low KP in the GD Quattro 75s

the 5 wood I have is to fill the distance between 3 wood and the hybrid, but its an optional club that I remove if I want to play a 52/56/60 combo instead of the 52/58 or 52/60 combo.

thanks for the replies guys! actually i don't plan on dropping my x-ut hybrids for woods any time soon...sooo much easier for me to control and the distance is pretty good. hmm...do you guys think the 4-wood will be at least 20 yards longer than the hybrid?

Hey shinichi,

(thank you again for the shaft - put it into the x-drive and still a work in progress)

I have always had better success with a 4 wood vs a 3-5 wood. I currently am using a 904f 17* with stock stiff speeder shaft. Probably my go to club for the moment. Distance with that club is consistantly 240 carry teed up. Problem I have is I hit it as far or just short of my previous driver and its more consistant. The x-drive is definately longer, just having some swing and control problems with it.

back to the topic at hand, I also picked up bogeydog's GFT 4-wood (thanks bogeydog). Ball flight is higher and distance is about 20 yards shorter, but that is probably more to do with the shaft (code8). Also am hooking the ball on a regular basis with it - again I plan to change out that shaft (have a v 6070 that I'll probably try). For comparative purposes, I also use a X-UT 21* nspro stiff that I carry 210. I haven't hit the 17* but would expect it to fall in between - for me it would probably be close to the GFT 4 wood set-up I have now.

Not too sure if it would be 20 yards longer than the 17* though.

Using a 4 wood in my case, just simplified my bag for me. Distance gaps work out just fine

and I'm able to use 1 club both off a tee and the deck.

Hey, I actually did this experiment, and still doing it. Last year I put a G-Field 4 wood in the bag. Loved it, but like you, I didn't like the distance loss as much. I had used a 13 degree long ago and was longing for a club that I could hit a great distance when needed. The performance of the 4 was awesome. But, I didn't like it off the tee so much and I wanted that club for both the tee and fairway. So, when both Epon and TourStage came out with the 13.5, bam, I was in there. Question was, which one. Went with the Epon and I'm very satisfied. Off the tee is absolutely huge. Very easy off the deck and I can work it left to right or right to left. Not to mention the feel is unreal but I think I've posted that at least 20 times before so I won't get into that here. The 4 wood stayed in the bag just because I liked hitting it and it was still very useful. Picked up a 7 wood to take two utilities out. 7 wood was nice but felt like there was something missing. So now I have a TourStage X-UT 17 on the way as well as cavity back 3 iron. 4 wood and 7 wood will be out of the bag while I try this out to see if the yardage gaps become a little better. Also, I think with the new setup my bag will have a little more versatility at the top end of the bag. We'll see. Still fine tuning and experimenting.
