gocchin
So in my weekly search for new clubs to try. I was looking at the PRGR R35 "Chipper" wedge in the Pro Shop here: http://www.tourspecgolf.com/proshop/p780/P...oduct_info.html It's pretty much a 35 degree wedge built and weighted like a 34" putter at 547g. The concept is simple. You play it like a putter from anywhere around the outside edges of the green. It allows you to use your putting stroke for extra accuracy and create a low 25% carry 75% roll shot right at the pin. I decided to get one to try it out as reviews in Japan say, if any club saves you strokes, this is it. I brought it out to the driving range and hit the practice greens so I could try the club from all different lies and distances. PRGR says it's optimal within a 5 yard zone outside the green. This club is going in the bag. If you are a good putter this is the club for you. From 10 to 15 yards from the hole. This thing was deadly. After getting an understanding of how much much I needed to swing the R35 to get it going a certain distance I actually put a few right in the hole. It worked from rough, fairway, fringe, even sand (as long as the bunker was not deep. The key, control! Even shots that didn't go into the hole often ended up 1 or 2 feet from the hole. This club is a winner... it is impossible to fluff or over hit because of it's heavy controlled weight. Luckily I had a space for it in the bag. Phillip Alexander
It would definetly help as Jack's DTs don't help his chipping.

viperact
Is there any other brand to this type of wedge?
Duffer19
Is there any other brand to this type of wedge? This is basicaly a chipper and has been around for 20 years and different brands (Wilson etc). It is not as popular as one has to give up another club in the bag to accommodate this one. The chipper could be just as easily replaced by the 7 to pw. The merit is not the length or loft but the weight and lie of the chipper. Forte
I just use my hybrid.
viperact
well, i do not use a hybrid because of how high it goes in normal shots. i noe there're many chipper wedges like this and i thought it may be pretty cool since i never try one b4. i also wondered the uses of this chipper: 1. can it be used in approach shots from 50 yards in? 2. will it produce any backspin? 3. (might be a stupid question) can it be used as a putter alternative? i seen old people in my area use them, so i'm not surprised by the idea. what i'm surprised by is that there are still new models available. jacksonlui
the picture shows two different shots. a lob with a wedge versus a bump and run with this chipper. you can do the same with any club in your bag. the idea is to land it and let it roll to the hole. i'd go with a hybrid and choke down, it's really the same thing. gocchin
I was carrying 13 clubs so I thought I'd give this a try. I've never thought of using my hybrid before (^^). I'll carry it for 18 on Monday but so far it is indeed easy to aim right at the hole with a putter stance.
smokey7713
damn that 14 club rule..... if there was only one rule to change... I'm pretty sure the OEM's would love that! Also the COR rule is stupid. Whether I hit it 280 or 480, you still gotta keep it in play, and you still got to putt the stupid ball in the hole. By the way, I thought the USGA banned chippers? Can someone confirm this?
smokey7713
oops sorry I googled it and found out that chippers are OK but there are restrictions: http://www.usga.org/playing/rules/books/decisions/dec04.html I think that means you cant put a putter grip on a chipper....too bad! LOL.

I think I will give that a shot. Plus it would subtract 547g from my bag... (^_^)
Forte
If you use a hybrid to chip onto the green, use a low lofted one (ie. 16-19 degrees) for those 20-30 feet away. You will be amazed.

Of course you can use a hybrid to chip. As a matte of fact, you can use a lot of different clubs but Gocchin's chipper would have the proper length and he would have not to choke down and alter his putter stroke. For some, it is a indeed a stroke saver but I just dont have the room but if I do, it would be for another wedge or something else.
