Posted September 19, 200717 yr comment_141722 Well there has been some mention of MTI here on the forum before. It's a wedge created by Cool Design Inc, a company created by Miyagi Yuuji, it has a very large tour following and in the last year eclipsed all other brands (even fourteen and vokey) as the most used wedge on the Japanese tour. MTI or Miyagi Tour Ism has announced a collaboration with Yokohama Rubber Company (PRGR in the golf world) to bring the wedges retail. There are basically two models one for a Digger/Deep Impact (Type D) and one for a Sweeper/Shallow Impact (Type S) and two lofts in each model (53 and 58). There is a lot of talk going around on sites in Japan as regular people have been dying to get their hands on MTI for a very very long time. Should be here in October!

There are quite a few JLPGA girls using it. They push it towards the female crowd especially with it's graphics.

September 20, 200717 yr comment_141746 it's amazing to see tourstage staffers, taylor made japan staffers, staffers from all the major brands etc. using these wedges in favor of something from their sponsors. every Japanese golf magazine that has bag pics for the JPGA they are just littered everywear. a little flashy for my liking, but the guy must be doing soemthing right!

I may stand corrected, however they do not appear to be in the same league as Chikara....but I am bias because I'm loving mine at the moment. Personally the Epons also look better to my eye.

You have to understand the Japanese consumer psychology in general and to a lesser of a degree in the pro tour. Is this wedge better than anything else? Who knows but if you get enough player using it, the consumer would follow. That is the reason why most if not all the golf magazines in Japan carry WITB of every single tour player. The latest ‘Golf Style’ survey actually shows Titleist wedges has the highest usage among those surveyed. Japan makes the best golf equipments IMO but the trick is do your own research and if possible, try it out first before buying.
September 20, 200717 yr comment_141784 the japanese consumers are fad chasers... most things that work there are like shooting stars...... bright and then phooosh!... just because its in demand there now.... does not necessarily mean that its worth having.... even pepsi and coke do limited runs there ....producing enough so that there is shortfall that creates "must have status"...... September 20, 200717 yr Author comment_141788 There are definitely tons of fads in Japan, I know alllllllll about them (^_^). However I am very curious about MTI, so many pros play them and not a single one is paid to do so yet they are paid big bucks and by their own sponsors but don't play their wedges. Miyagi was a one man show much like Carlton and Sasaya and custom grinded every single one for every player, though I highly doubt that will be the case for the retails.

I understand all about the Japanese consumer market as I have intimate ties to Japan. What I want to know from a performance point is why the MTI. Pros don't use something unless they either get paid to use it, or it performs and helps them win toruneys.
September 21, 200717 yr comment_141820 We will have them, I have never hit them but it looks like MTI favors function over clean lines and style. I still think they are on the uglier side of the wedge spectrum but it has me intrigued. I have tried very hard to get along with the Chikara wedge but my steep swing vs its sharper leading edge and killed trailing edge just don't mesh for my personal swing yet its the best looking wedge hands down. When I look at the shape of these MTI Type D wedges I am not too thrilled but I have a good feeling that it would be better for my downward angle than the type S version. For those who have a steep angle of attack and produce heavy spin like me, the Tour Seida is a big help and something i strongly suggest.

Anything with a higher bounce and less camber not to mention almost no killed trailing edge and a nice blunted leading edge will work. Again the ultimate digger wedge is the TOUR Seida. BTW The MTI wedge will be available at TSG 10/16.

October 15, 200717 yr Author comment_143131 Carlo try the Royal Collection 6150TG, I am a very steep swinger and that has too be one of the easiest wedges I've used even though the head is compact. Beautiful M type grind and fantastic milled face for amazing spin. I'll definitely be giving these a try, and I think they will look better once I remove that ring of colored paintifill on the back... though they look nice at address:
