Epon EMB questions...

Hello,

I recently broke my driver during a round and can either re-install the original shaft...or use this as an excuse to try out new equipment. Logic says "re-shaft" but after reading all the reviews about the EMB I really cannot resist the urge to pull the trigger.

A bit on my swing:

- Aggressive swinger although my best swings do come when I am relaxed and swinging smooth. I have a quick tempo with a quick or jerky transition.

- Driving distance: Roughly 240 yards on average (225 carry and some run). My current setup was an original R7 9.5* with and Axiv 6060

- Trajectory: I tend to hit higher than average trajectories due to "scooping" action. I have a pretty nasty slice from time to time

If I were to spec out an EMB would this setup work for me?

9* loft, 46" length, standard face, SR flex AD shaft?

My two main concerns are the length of the club and loft. Would I benefit by specing the club @ 45.5" or 45" with a 10.5* loft?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I would try the 10.5 with the stock stiff shaft rather than the SR flex, standard length and swing weight. Best starting point. The stiff shaft won't feel that way. Should launch high, but sounds like a swing flaw. Yes the EMB seems to like smoother swings in this setup.

Thank you Bogeydog~

Looking at your bag setup, I take it you like your EMB in that setup :D? Stock length as well?

Mine is 45.5". I did this because at 5'-3" I couldn't see myself playing too long. Also it would have affected swing weight too much. Epon actually talked me into playing this long rather than at 44.5. My guess is that the design of the EMB is very calculated. I could be totally off base, but my thoughts are that the head has so much MOI that it can overcome the possible "wildness" of playing a longer shaft as well as a shaft with higher torque and soft feeling. Many have commented that the shafts feel too soft yet play so well. The setup works as is. I did temporarily replace the shaft with a high launch, low spin shaft and hated it. It felt dead and the results were poor. One day later I replaced it with the stock shaft and didn't look back. I have been tempted to try a AF101, but catch myself and ask why.

Hi Congrats on picking up a great club!!

I play mine at 45" rombax x series. But I think if you are going to play the stock shaft, it should be at least tried out at 46". I had the same concern when buying mine. Advice from all the members were the same: try out the stock length and if you don't like it cut it. I was very surprised at how well I could manage the club at stock length.

I'm 5'6 and at 46" I was bombing it way past my average drive distance. I then opted to go to the rombax 6x07 at 45", but the stock shaft provided a much more ballistic performance w/slightly higher ball speed and avg 3-5 yards more roll then the rombax, even though I could not swing the stock shaft as hard due to going left. Rombax shaft does bring the flight down for me which is what I wanted for the winds here in hawaii.

Next season I'm plan on placing back the stock shaft on the EMB at 46" again and trying it out.

Go for the stiff stock shaft at 46" as B and T say here. If you're naturally a high launcher you might want to try the 9* as the EMB launches high. Keep in mind though you will tee it lower due to the shallow face. The scooping action definitely contributes to the higher launch and a flatter swing plane would help that. A smooth relaxed swing will produce the best results.

I use a 10.5 with stock SR shaft in 45.5 (D0.5). My swingspeed is around 105mph.

Although the shaft seemed very wabbly at first, it is very stable.

I'm normally a low ball hitter, and with the EMB, nice medium high trajectory.

I'm 5'8" by the way.

777,

did your driver come yet? i didn't get to reply in time since i just got my emb but my best guess without knowing your swing would be a 10.5. I'm playing it 43.5 inches and have not on average loss any swing speed or distance, i just hit it more centered. In fact, I can swing my #4 hybrid iron almost as fast as my driver, not really sure why yet but it'll be a good idea to go long and then experiment till you get the length that yields the most centered sweet spot groupings. you'll play from the short stuff more often and increase your GIR stat.
