gus
So I'm taking the plunge, I will make sure to take pics and do a full review. I will be very interested to see if Taylormade Japan utilized the "soft cast" technology found in this irons brother on the PGA tour, the Burner B's. I know for curtain the US market is jealous to see these irons being released in Japan as the american option (R9 TP's) are not recieving a very warm welcome....BB Mini review... Specs: Burner TP/KBS Tour Black Chrome X-flex D2.5-D4 (perfect!) 38' 5 iron Bent 2.5 degrees flat (no damage what so ever) One range session, very very soft with super hot faces, I love them! Comparison pics are a Miura Blade PW and a 2009 Tour Authentic X-forged 6 iron (NOT to be mistaken for the origional 2007 X-forged); this Cally is a true players cavity back and the look/setup of the TM's is almost identical, nice! To answer one question, the cavity channel begins in the 7 iron. Also, the TM grip is similar to the Patriot grip as it has the new pattern and also no cord. My tech was extremely impressed with how consistant the head weights where, spot on! Nice job Taylormade, very well made iron heads. idrive
Looking forward to your review BB. Are you going to stay with the stock shafts or reshaft when you get them?
gus
I ordered them directly from TM Japan with Nippon 1050 x-flex so we will see, might workout OK...BB
idrive
I inquired about ordering a set but TM Japan will not bend them 2* flat for me. I really don't like bending cast clubs even though most people will tell you it's not a problem. imo, even though they will probably bend I believe the cast club has what I call "memory" and will want to go back to its original shape. Hitting it makes it move back faster. I don't want to snap one off so I passed. But I must say this is one of the few TM offerings I wanted to try. Looking forward to your review. gus
I know, I'm 2 degrees flat as well and will need to bend them, if they are soft castings (I think they are the actual Burner B's myself) then it really shouldn't be a problem; I spoke with a US Representative and they can bend the retail burners (standard cast) up to 4 degrees safely. I was too a little suprised they wouldn't bend them from the factory, if one snaps I will expect them to replace it but I highly doubt it will. I was just mentioning to somebody actually this will be my very first set of Taylormades, that's suprising but I've never really had any interest until the B's started surfacing and now these, cool looking irons for sure! +TourSpecGolfer
The first batch went super fast guys, I highly suggest pre order in the proshop if you want to get the second release in Feburary.
gocchin
Just to clarify, when we say the first batch went fast this is for standard spec sets. TM needs to produce several thousands of these sets at one time for mass release which is why the next batch is February. This as far as I know does not apply to custom spec orders as I know those of you who ordered custom specs may be concerned (though i am confirming with the rep today). Also just because the first batch is gone does not mean we cannot source a set so contact us first if interested.
18th Legion
I spoke with a US Representative and they can bend the retail burners (standard cast) up to 4 degrees safely. I have never heard of bending cast more than 2 degrees flat or 2 degress upright. Possibly this is what they meant? I would strongly advise against going 4 degrees in one direction. I personally will only need to bend them 1.5* so I'm not worried but thanks for the advice, my tech has 20yrs of experience...BB
+TourSpecGolfer
I have seen cast irons bend past 4+ degrees, It takes a lot of heat, care, and understanding that any iron could snap at any moment.

gticlay2
OR, if you are Ping you just hit it with a mallet until it's where you want it and no problemas. :)
gus
Funny you should say Ping, I found a BRAND NEW custom WRX set of Ping i+ Blades last season purchased as a "classic" from Ping early last season that had one fly in the ointment, 2 degrees upright. After debate with my tech I went ahead purchased them and held my breath. These babies have custom starshot finish, radius grinds, the works, incredible set. So I take them over to bend them, heat them up and they bend 4 degrees like butter, not a single pop, zero. They are one sick set of irons too, they have the proprietary Ping AWT shafts which are a dream to play, if you ever get a chance to smooth these shafts you will shocked! Anyway, it can be done........BB Edited December 19, 2009 by BigBen
gus
So getting back to the Burners, I purchased a set of limited addition black chrome KBS Tour shafts for these irons and will completely rebuild them when they arrive (S200's don't cut it for me), can't wait, should be a hot looking setup...BB

gus
I will probably pull the red MC's and use a set of multi-color Iomic stickys, I'm actually putting a set on my Titty MB's right now to see if I like them. I got a great deal on 13 grips in all the colors of the rainbow so we will see how they fair on these first. If not I will probably lean towards the Patriots or white MC's. I'm guessing the heads will be a hair light so I will be limited to these options I'm guessing. I will probably also bring the swingweight up to D3 with a tiny bit of tungsten powder down the shaft then cork them for feel. Should help fine tune the harshness of a cast iron head then off to the races! Based on PM's I'm hoping for sometime early Jan; it's getting nasty in Ohio anyway so I can be patient...BB Edited December 19, 2009 by BigBen
gocchin
If you play 37.75" or 38" with the TP Burner and your KBS you should have no problems reaching a higher swing weight without adding powder. The stock S200 is already D3 at 37.5" stock length for the 5 iron.

gus
That's the objective! I've only warmed up to one set of cast irons in my life (Pings mentioned above) but I'm making an educated guess that these are indeed Taylormades "soft" castings (found on tour). Would make sense, they reserve them in the US for the grey market (ie. out the tour vans back door) in the B version. This Japanese Burner TP is identical in every single way to the RARE Burner B's which sold for big bucks as there was only 25 sets in exsistance. I'm again guessing the JPGA recieved the same ones which indeed made it to Japan's retail where as the R9 TP's made it to US retail (hate this iron, NOT soft cast!). Long story short, this is a good deal for these irons so guys snatch them up...BB Edited December 20, 2009 by BigBen

idrive
Not trying to answer for BB... but they don't look anything alike, especially at address. IMO, one is a players CB, the other a GI iron. I wanted to get a set of the Burner forged but I just can't get over the thick top line and sole (of any club). The good ball striker is going to want and play the TP any day over the Burner. BB?
