Bigger news than TW's statement today for me LOL.

A very exciting development for sure.

.... just not sure they should have used 'Anser' as the product name..... maybe too much to live up to?

I know... it's going to be an excellent club for those looking for this style/setup.

Congrats to Ping for making a forged club... with a ton of off set.

The cavity... is really bad too.... do you push the button and the Ping logo pops open and that's

where the ball marker goes? or perhaps you can change the weights under there?

I haven't actually seen the specs yet so I mistakenly said they were S25C forged when the are in fact forged from 8620 Carbon Steel (8620 is used in irons like Adams Idea Pro Forged).

The long irons are made to be easy to hit and focus on distance which is why they have more offset and the shorter irons less offset to focus on control. Ping touts these as ease of use forged irons with balanced distance, feel and control.

T do you think they have produced a forged iron in Japan because there is a higher proportion of forged iron players there than in the US? or that they have finally capitulated to the pressure of demand from loyal customers? Just wondering why now really?

It's definitely the kind of product Japanese golfers want and are willing to pay for. As you all know JDM gear is priced higher which allows manufacturers more room for use of more expensive manufacturing, designs and materials. This is one of the reasons why Japan carries all US Models PLUS all their own models because the market supports it.

Ping has already begun heavy promotions in Japan for the Anser Forged and in coming weeks there are several demo days going all throughout Japan which I and many other golf enthusiasts will definitely be taking part in. But you are right that every brand here has forged models, not just for the single digit pro/athlete golfer but many average golfer models are also forged. Average golfers in Japan do indeed want to play a forgiving forged CB and thats what many of the manufacturers give them like the AF-701, XXIO Forged, Burner Forged, Legacy Forged, Nike Machspeed Forged etc etc...

Can we assume there would be a graphite shaft option?

Hi R,

Yes the standard shafts are Ping AWT and ZZ65. The standard graphite shaft is TFC615i.

Upgrade shafts and custom specs will be available through Ping WRX as always.

Here is an offset pic from a short iron (9)... following Ping's design of a long irons easy to hit for distance and short irons control like wedges, the offset is much less noticeable but still there

gocchin, as these are 8620, are they truly forged? I understand that forging is about a process, not a metal. However, it was also my understanding that the identifiers of the metals are associated with the process. As an example Titleist 8620 Wedges and Scratch 8620 Wedges are cast. Could you clarify?

Also, I will be the one to ask, do you know where they are forged/made?

Thanks

8620 can be made using the casting process as well as the forged.

One is produced using a mold, the other is heated and pressed.

They can also be form forged.

  • 5 months later...

I called Ping to ask about the forging and specs. Here's what they told me:

Forging is done in China

Assembly is done in the U.S.

Only sold currently in Japan

Available in the States in November on a limited basis

MSRP set at $190/club

Ping fitting system will work fine as they are very close to the i15's with an offset of .118.
