Tsuioku
Saw an ad in the local Craigslist selling a Honma 460RF for $39! http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/rch/spo/1886689459.html Looking at the pictures... the colour scheme is a little off compared to some pictures found on ebay ("H" circles seem silverish and surrounding area is painted black). After further questioning, it doesn't have the "Made in Japan Sakata" engraved on the head and on the toe, instead of saying "Forged", it says "The World Renowned Honma". The shaft is also a 5-star Twin Kick Doric. His explanation is that it is one of the earlier releases (Serial number is in the 3xxxxxx vs 6xxxxxx on ebay). For the Honma experts out there, does this sound legit or a fake? EDIT: Just found one that looks the same on Yahoo Auctions: http://hk.f2.page.auctions.yahoo.com/hk/auction/b15945354 Edited August 9, 2010 by Tsuioku
+TourSpecGolfer
Fake! about 5 years ago the 460RF was being sold direct from china for 60.00 USD with no badge or 70.00 with the circle badge.
Tsuioku
Were my suspicions correct or were there other dead giveaways? Saw some other auctions and seems like the gold finish of the circles on the sole wear off making them silverish. The toe stamp, lack of "Made in Japan Sakata" and colour scheme does seem off though. When you say Honma badge, do you mean the gold circles on the bottom or is it some sort of accessory that comes with the club?
+TourSpecGolfer
Hi Tsuioku, By badge i mean the golf circle on the bottom. The biggest giveaway is that its a 460RF which was IMO is the honma driver that had the most flakes floating around.
Tsuioku
Is the price the main deterrent or how it looks? You happen to know if it has any characteristic sound? A little late notifying my friend... already grabbed it. Emailed the seller though and he had no idea on its authenticity. He claims it was purchased 6-8yrs ago and was used simply because it hit better than his Wilson ProStaff. He was willing to exchange it for anything else he's currently selling though. I'll probably try it later this week and see how it feels. If it really is a fake though... wow that guy on Yahoo auctions is overpricing it. 4500HKD ~ 450USD! EDIT: Just got confirmation from Honma... Hopefully my friend can do a refund. Edited August 10, 2010 by Tsuioku
seesawgolfer
Is the price the main deterrent or how it looks? You happen to know if it has any characteristic sound? #1: The price is a major flag to be suspicious. #2: Heads only is another ALERT! (for brands that do not sell head only.) #3: How the product looks. May look cheaper. Or small differences in emblems, shape, graphics, etc.
