Above_Beyond
Hi Everyone! Im new to this forum and very excited to be here! For my first thread I am taking suggestions for what to put in the bag for fairway woods for the season. Last season I flitted around with a Precious Edition 3 Wood and a 5 Wood from KZG. I need to push the lofts down the chart and am looking for a 12* and 16* - preferably from the same series for consistency. I Junked my 5 wood and replaced it with a 2 iron. I find a 2 iron blade cuts through the rough and enables me to work the ball with more precision and I get a bit more distance from the 2 anyway. So let me know - your suggestions (w/ shaft rec); playing approx 3 HCP. Edited February 11, 2011 by Above_Beyond

+TourSpecGolfer
Hi AB, Welcome to the forum, thanks for making a signature, now all you need is an avatar! In regards to fairway woods, so many. The favorites at TSG are the new PRGR Egg, Epon AF202 HT Spec, Royal Collection FW's and there are also a couple of new Spoon's set to come out one from MAC TEC Japan and the other from Maruman. It will come down to your budget and what sort of characteristics you want. Looking for a distance? Go EGG! It will send the ball up pretty quickly. Also driving irons are a good way to go as well! Anyway so many options for you here, Are you looking for lower lofts to lower the flight or simply gain more distance?
Above_Beyond
I prefer a medium-low ball flight. Distance is not of great concern to me - I find that distance is a product of swing dynamics and athleticism, very few clubs seems to add more than an extra yard or two. What good clubs change for me is the consistency of impact and the predictability of resultant flight attributes i.e. launch, spin and trajectory. With that said the reasons for lower lofts on my fairway woods are as follows: Workability of the tee: 300+ yards off the tee is not necessary or desirable for every hole, so I like to be able to really work the ball with the f-woods off the tee-box to capitalize on narrow fairways and dog legged holes. Thus having a drivable wood which stays under the wind and maintains roll is desirable. (This is the rational for the 2) Club spacing: Im not overly concerned with having x degrees of loft between clubs. However it is necessary to make sure that each club serves a particular purpose and is not redundant. Personally a two iron replaces a 5 wood, however for deep rough (from far out) and roll I would like to keep a fairway wood in the bag. (This is the reason for the 4 wood.) That and I played one of my lowest rounds ever driverless with a 2 wood and 4 wood in the bag (CWB Hong Kong) Budget wise - mmm that depends on whether the ticker tape is up or down on the day I go to place my order. Im a student so there are always days when i feel the need to say no to my club addiction. ...the egg spoon is almost ugly enough to make me want it. Spoon
i vote for the egg spoon 17*. stupid easy and long. makes me greedy enough to want the 15(which i had) but 17 is a no brainer! i also had the ht and they are equally as long. my only complaint is that the egg is just not friendly on the tee! Above_Beyond
This egg sure is popular... you two might have me convinced - I may have to order one.
shacco
This egg sure is popular... you two might have me convinced - I may have to order one. Not sure how the new one plays (coz I have never hit it) but the old Egg Spoo is not made to keep the ball down. It carries forever but the trajectory is high. Supo67 from the Forum here can chime in here. He has tons of experiences with the Eggs.

I agree with ya Spoon, the EGG is not the best off the tee. I don't get along with any shallow face FW's off the tee. Even the 202 HT. standard 202 is a gem off the Tee! Royal Collection makes some killer driving fairways! My opinion is that nothing beats the Egg off the fairway.

Spoon
C, How's the back by the way? well after 6 months of therapy i got the go ahead signal to slowly start playing and strengthening my muscles 3rd week of january started with range work, then 2 9 hole rounds then full 18s. its been like crazy, i think i overdid it and pulled a muscle in my back, nothing spinal i think i just need rest. not as flexible as i used to be was so excited to play the quadras so i could not resist playing 2 back to back rounds in a mountain course. i have therapy and pt today and will find out. in the meantime i found my grail irons and will have them installed tom, also have a new wedge coming from senor ho numero uno in japan! updates to follow soon. Spoon
that's good to hear C, So graphite iron shafts part of your future? actually no:) i am currently having the best success with the s300. i have tried all the japanese and american shaft offerings, name it ive tried it and never would have realized that i would settle with the dgs300s. i love it so much im putting the tour issue s300s in my epon 502/302 combo set. graphite will have to wait. It's due to the head design and also the stock shaft. The old egg shaft is softer than the new one. But I did change the shaft on the old Egg and it still launched high and goes far. As for hitting off the tee with the new Egg, I have to tee it low and it becomes a bullet.

Above_Beyond
thats something i seriously have to try! its great stuff - its won a bunch of awards over the past few years. Hakaido has a climate very similar to northern scotland so the malting results are very similar. I find that the Yamazaki single malts have a nice fresh taste that makes them very drinkable. Right now im sipping on a 21 y.o. Benromach - its very nice also :) anyway else like single malts? scotch in general?

supo
low lofted fairways huh........., dont think ive seen a 12*, 13* is the lowest ive spotted. but if u want a set of players woods, then these are pretty ..............darn....................good.................! in fact., in fact , infact, subject to gaming them this sunday. it will take a monumental cluster up on my behlf, ( which im positive wont happen) to keep these out of my bag.................................., .............................................. indefinatly. yup, the mighty all conquering egg spoon of last year has a collosal challenge to make the cut now. its on the bench, obviosuly itlll still start in certian matches, particularly if i need to bomb greens from a far. but for workability, looks, feel, these little beauties. . well im gagging to have a bash with them in a match at the range last night . wow, i could hardly put em down. they are much easier to hit than i initiially thought , i was expecting tiger esque difficulty , and the trajectory is surprisingly mid. i though i was in for worm burners. but nope. could move them about willy-nilly, distance no problems, not overly long. but absolutely no problems what so ever. i think the yamaha is longer and equally solid off the tee , but thier over all performance just no 1. they are reshafted with crazy black fw 8.2 x 43 and 42 inch raw. they look well........... fabulous, and the 60circ. white imic x-evols make then a an absolute joy to hold. final judgement on mon after sundays match ( all things being equal and i mange to get out of the tokyo show ) but not playing in a month is making me very itchy... hitting balls at the range is fun , but the thrill of comp is another thing completely ! Spoon
great post stew! funny youd post this now as i am really shopping for another 3w. the 3 egg 17* as mighty as it is on the fairway is not a confidence inspiring club for off the tee wallops. ive thought hard for months about a possible solution and the egg is not one of them. well there is a trade of perfecto off the fairway is different from on the tee and i believe the opposite is quite true as well. before posting that i was actually thinking of the royal collections and the yamahas, am also considering the 202 non ht but i think im done experimenting with epon fw woods for now and actually want one of the first two brands i mentioned. now for the shaft, im pretty happy with the f6m2 but may consider either the f7m2 or even an ozik hd7 for my 3w.
