skippercarey
Had a lesson on bunker play yesterday my coach is quite the short game guru and his take on bunker play was different to anything iv ever seen..........closed stance instead of open with the ball position out in front of the left foot, i was amazed how well this worked he had me hiting flop shots with a 56* to pins with no more than 2-3 m of green to play with.....the ball was landing like a butterfly with sore feet!!!..................it got me thinking about weather i need to be playing a 60*? and weather id be better off playing 2 x 56* wedges.........one with high bounce specific for bunker play and a low bounce for chip/pitch shots off the firm fairways i play on here in Australia. I d like to hear if anyone had tried this B4? and whats available in JDM wedges with low bounce, most iv seen are around 12* and up
Duffer19
I started to carry two sand wedges recently, a 54* low bounce at 7* for pitching and chipping and 58* high bounce solely for sand play. With this combination, my 51* gap wedge have not seen too much play lately. As to JDM wedges, Fourteen has some low bounce wedges such as the J-spec 54* at 7*. Duffer19
I guess one could argue that a 54* is really a gap instead of a sand. Now I have a 4 wedge combo, pitching at 45*, A at 51*, a 54 and 58.
+TourSpecGolfer
Yururi makes some interesting looking yet amazing performance wedge heads. I'm using the Rupas 60* and its my bunker savior, Tario also bags one for the rounder sole and it's easy to hit. The face is raw so it feels pure at impact. conforming grooves as well. Their new Chili wedge has a good shape and the bounce options are designated by 1 chili 2 chili 3 chili. they have a 57 w/18* bounce. and a 57* w/ 9 bounce. They are only sold in 51/57 lofts. ihatebogies
Sorry no help on wedges since I'm also looking for new ones myself but am curious about your short game guru's method. In the bunker with a closed stance are you aiming left, right or straight at the target and are you playing the wedge open or not. Also you mentioned hitting flop shots and I assume from greenside locations not in the bunker with the same stance and wedge position. I might have to give this a try! Jim Yeah it a very similar style from the grass what it does is really frees the arms up, with the bunker flop shot you would aim at the pin but with wide stance and back leg behind the left closed off a bit, ball position out off the front foot and club face 1/2 open, then you basicly use plenty off wrist cock on the back swing and follow through really whiping the hands through for a more standard bunker shot you set up much the same with the wide stance and weight on the left side but legs more level not closed off With the normal chip/pitching off grass its not as extreme he just tries to get me to get the weight on the left leg feet closer together aiming at the target and to really feel like your pressing down through the ball not coming up and out off the shot which usually causes the dreded scoop or drop kick. What the aim is with all these chiping/pitching styles is to get the ball to spin straight............not all the side spin which i was getting with the old style, it may have looked good with the ball spining madley all over the place but ist very hard to control. If you really get satisfaction out off spining the s**t out off everything then this probably isnt for you but one thing i have noticed is how i hole out a lot more now. The bunkers iv seen a instant improvement but the chiping around the green has taken a while to feel comfortable with the ball checking and releasing to the hole its been a lot harder to get used to and is still a work in progress. skippercarey
took the vokey 58/8 out this arvo and i can see why so may pros bag em.................a lot easier to spin from the fairway with the lower bounce i was really geting it to shoot and skip out low and with some serious spin, only downfall was cast head not even close to the feel of the Forged JDM wedges, but it does get the job done and due to the pure contact i was geting it was a lot easier to control to distance. What i need now is a JDM 56-58 around 8ish bounce M grind and im set!! Maybe i should go and sell the house for some custom golds factorys! Take a look at the Geotech GT custom special grind forged wedges. They are forged in Japan has 53, 56 and 58 in 8* bounce.
