irishputter
I love the look of the Fourteen HI610h T.S., but I'm looking for a 5 iron replacement (in my bag it's a 26*), and the Fourteen only goes down to a 24*. Are there other manufacturers that make a 26* that match the forgiveness and sweet look of the HI610h T.S. ?
swing981
Can they bend the head safely
irishputter
Can they bend the head safely That's a good idea. Does anyone know if these can be bent?
gocchin
Cast iron so bending is limited. They can be bent probably an additional 2* very carefully, though keep in mind this will also alter bounce slightly. I would not suggest it as it would change the dynamics of the head slightly. There is no driving iron with a loft that high but there are utilities.

I should probably just practice working on my 5 iron stroke a bit, but it's gotten to become a mental wall where I just do not get along with that club for some reason. One of the difficult thing with replacing an iron with a hybrid (or driving iron) is that they are not always equivalent in terms of loft. It's trial and compare, but most hybrids launch pretty high so they tend to have a lower loft for the equivalent iron. I think onoff or xxio has some hybrids that are 27. Most go up to 25 ... prgr, royal collection. But they all don't have the exact same playing characteristics. Epon 901 in 25 is a good one too. +TourSpecGolfer
I'm working on a quick review of the hi610 T.S. I've hit it a bunch along with the Srixon Z-UTi which I also love. Written review on the Fourteen in a couple of days.
dkats
The new ONOFF utility looks good and comes in 27*. It doesn't have the iron look like the Fourteen, but would look similar to the Royal Collection you are playing.

But not even just loft is difficult to mix and match, the fact that hybrids typically have longer shafts as well, pretty much always will result in more distance. A 27* lofted hybrid with a 39" club length can be just as long as a 25* iron with 37.75" club length. Manufacturers don't even follow suit loft wise for this reason. For example I am now using the #5 VG3 UT which is 25* but the VG3 Forged 5 iron its replacing is 24*. I can surely hit the 25* utility longer. There is always some mixing and matching to do... Thanks, T. The nice thing about hybrids is that you can stick it on the green easier than its replacement iron which can roll off for someone (like me) who have a hard time hitting long irons high enough. I hit that epon 901 you used to have from Marc, and I'll always wonder why you got rid of such a nice club.
irishputter
A bit of an update. I appreciate the updates for those on this site. Played 18 holes today, and found if I just grip down an inch on my 24* Fourteen I can fill the gap that my 5 iron should fill. Think I'm going to simplify, and drop the 5 iron completely, and use my trusty 24* for those shots. Leaves me with 13 clubs in the bag, and room to fit a 60* wedge in the bag.....a win-win! MatthewC
thanks for teh update. I'm thinking about doing the same. Why do you prefer the driving iron over the 5 iron?
irishputter
thanks for teh update. I'm thinking about doing the same. Why do you prefer the driving iron over the 5 iron? Hi Matt, My swing plane is more of a sweeper, than a digger, so I hit my fairway woods and UT clubs better than I do long irons (ie. 3/4/5 irons).
