13* 3-wood recommendations

The course I play most frequently is a fairly short course and although I carry an use a driver on it, there are really only two or three holes where I can actually lay into it. Otherwise it is a 3, 5 or 7 wood of the tee and from the deck on the par 5s. On the holes I use it on I am frequently left with 60-90 yard shots(60* wedge ~100 yds) and in a few instances risk flying through the fairways on the dog legs. Since I am in the process of building a new conforming bag over this and next season am considering dropping down to a 13* FW in lieu of the driver. I have an old TaylorMade V-Steel 13* that I am testing the theory with and it is proving fruitful.

I have looked at the RC D/S but am unsure about the increased head size over a traditional FW and how it will hit of the deck when necessary. Same thoughts on the Maruman Shuttle as the RC D/S. What other options should I consider and why? Am I just being stupid for this approach?

The rest of my bag is shaping up as the TourStage 905 blades 5-PW, OnOff ProWings utility 21 & 24*, wedges will probably happen early next season. So I will also be looking to put a ~17* FW in the bag as well.

Thanks for your thoughts,

RIDuffer

most def not!

i am doing exactly thesame dropping distance in the driver for a 12.8* d/ from kasco and im hittting more fairways and scoring a lot better.

i play a cpl oftracks that dont realy need the big dog and its worked brilliantly.

ive just ordered the RC d/s , it was supposed to be here today but hasnt shown yet.

wanted it desperatly for toms game , looks like it wont behere in time.

thr 13* egg is the one that springs to mind if u want a fw.

or just the 15* old egg, thats plenty long enough

Did you try the RC before ordering? If so what were your thoughts on the head size, is the volume increase due to the height of the face or the depth as well? How is it to hit sans tee?

Thanks,

The new Yonex Ezone is a sweet looking 13* fairway (I have one on order but it may never arrive!). Pear shaped although the smaller head may not be what you are looking for! It is a tough ask, you want a bigger head for off the Tee but a smaller playable one for fairways. It depends how good you are RI? A 13* requires a bit of clubhead speed to get a good launch and then it is still problematic off tight lies (unless you develop lots of spin). i would have thought if your course is relatively short, there would not be many 240 yard fairway shots to be had. Even if they are, short courses tend to have small greens so holding a long flat fairway metal is unlikely. I would use something like the RC D/S and game a 16* 4 wood and carry an extra wedge for those short game shots! The RC will be usable on good lies and the 16* will give you good trajectory into the smaller greens.

i was going to suggest the RC D/S as well. however i am not aware of its forgiveness from the fairway.

if there is anyone who can shed light it is Gocchin as he has gamed these before. Stew will be coming

out with a review so you could possibly pm him as well.

now if the D/S is something you dont want to have to deal with, the egg gets my vote as well in 13. for

14* there are many such as the yamaha inpres x v and the RC twin rail 14*. good luck

I thought about the Yamaha as well as it has a larger head than most! Still goes great off the fairway. The shaft is the key.

agree about the 13* off a fairway, not the easiest club ill ever hit.

and a higher spin shaft will be a neccessity.

the yamaha 14 is a great club, distance terrific, feel beautiful ,and depending on the shaft either ahigher mid or low penetrating shot. top stick this one.

but,............., the 15* egg makes most other look pedestrian really.

AND it gets up in the air much better than all the rest.

that the one i m thinking by a way.

a shaft with a bit more spin or softer flex and itll rocket to the greens like uve never seen before.

this does the job of the D/S but its a bilion times easier to hit from a fairway.

hard to beat really............,

Yonex 13* is stand out, feels great soft and crunchy. I'm not to thrilled about how the driver and ut feels though.

I hit the RC driving spoon, It was a little to deep faced for me and when struck pure was equal in distance to my EGG they just took two different routes. The Egg with lots of carry and a softer landing the RC low with a ton of roll. As far as consistency of result goes I still vote Egg but think the RC would do well in the hands of a hard hitter.
