FrankThong
I replaced the 3-iron with a 20° hybrid/ute a year ago, and it has worked out quite nicely. After getting the TRC, consistency was upped another notch and I might have gained a couple of yards too! With my irons selection getting easier to use, I think I have become a lazier golfer. Yesterday, I was hitting the 4-iron like an idiot, slapping it around the course like a two bit ho. Which got me thinking, should I dump my 4-iron for a 23° TRC? While I'm at it, why not get the 26° and lose the 5-iron too? Sure, there'll be some ego-bruising taunts from the boys, but is this the way to go? Does this road lead to performance-enhancing chunky munky irons next *shiver*? Then again, if YE Yang can do it, what me worry? What do you guys think? supo
Frank i went down that road last yr ive got abt 10 hybrids sitting idle now used everything icud get my mittens on al with. Varying degrees of success ive settled on a cpl of egg irons ive converted that play monster long for when ineed a hybriid and i rotate the 4 iron depending on courses i think i practise with the 4 as much as any iron now to make sure i can strike. Balls with it when needed the. Irons go lower and are a lot more workable i cant wont hit one in the wind at links its madness thats why i gotta be able to clunk the 4 plus the yammy tours are 2deg loft. Jacked so a 4 is really a shorter length 3 iron heaps easier to hit consistantly i need both rotate whenneeded esp when the beatch slap comes into play bust out the ute those egg irons are virtually utes anyway i got em from3 -6 now 19'-26' cant drop a 4 tho completely its such a great club when u get it well Edited July 10, 2011 by supo67
Spoon
I'm the opposite, I have only used 5-pw in the past Focusing on my iron play and have added a 4 iron. Lovin My new irons right now that I ot the 302 3i! I also have the trc Ute in 20 which I use of the rough or on trickeir lies. The 3i I use On a certain 220 par 3, I could never reach it due to the spray like Tram of the hybrids, hence I have the 3i. Am experimenting with a steel shaft on the trc. Il continue to observe The performance Nd flight . As for you frank do whatever you feel That will improve your game. If that means dumping irons for hybrids then by all Means go for it. DaleUK
And I love my 4 iron....hit like god, wish I could day the same about the shorter irons,!!
Eca
I like my 4i too. I bought 3H but it's long so it's more like a 5W so the 3i stayed lol. I like my 3i off the tee for precision drive and low shots the deck. Thinking of dropping it for an extra wedge.
RIduffer
Been a 5-PW person also for a while although the hybrids are new. Usually played a 7 wood and would choke down some/swing a little easier to get that 4i distance. Now I am gaming the 21 and 24 deg OnOff Pro Specs, very nice indeed. I agree with Spoon, play what you like and let the boys laugh all they want especially if they are handing over the coin after the round... Blader-X
Oh yes, the never ending question. I tried to do this of late myself, going with the new TRC 17 and bringing back the old TRC in 22. However like Stew, I just need the four. Especially now that my swing has returned to form after suffering injury last year. Now even the 3 makes an appearance in place of the 4 from time to time. During practice both are in the bag. Hybrids are great but I would suggest bringing the long irons to practice. Really helps hone the ball striking. Speaking of Stew, are you still gaming the RC Spoon 11.5?

My usual iron trajectory is high; with these new 302s, it has gone even higher (could be the Crazy Neos, not sure). The 4-iron goes up a mile on a full whack and averaged out, I think I may be losing a couple of yards. But it's not just that, I am finding the long irons to be such a pain to hit in comparison with the utes. I can hit the TRC high or low, with a bit of luck, draw or fade, or with ease, straight as an arrow. Such a joy, you know. Yeah, I know it's hard to drop the 4-iron, it is my go-to club when I need a super power fade or a punchy hook to get out of the jungle. I've not tried to do that with an ute yet! Hmm... Hmm... i did that yesterday with my 20 trc. i was under a tree in the rough with my full swing being restricted by the branches. i was around 215 away. i punched it with a half swing went dead straight and i was on the fringe. was around 15 feet away. i 3 putted for bogey! Ha, C, we're moving in opposite directions and bumped into each other with the same clubs. What irony! You're gaining distance, I might be losing a couple yards here and there. You're ordering a 3-iron, I'm thinking of shelving the 4-iron.
FrankThong
I'm a 5-PW guy with usually a couple of driving irons. Well, if I ever drop the 4-iron, I might have to make up for the loss of macho-ness by dressing 'dance with dragon' mean. Thought you guys were bringing on some cool dwd stuff? ;)

Haha, I was under a tree way left on a par-5, tried to hook the ball with the TRC 20 back on the fairway, failed, the ball flew a mile to the right of the next fairway, so I hit the TRC again, this time over the other green, over the trees, over the bunkers and onto the correct green 12 ft from the hole and then also 3-putted for bogey! supo
Yes im gamin at least one of the rcs every round played 6 times in the last week and im not scoring just hitting tons of balls on course used the 11.5 crazy yesterday agn with a different outcome didnt game a driver as course was really short i reckon its 20 yards short if driver and10 OVER the 3.
