Epon 302's vs 2011 OnOff Forged

Anyone have experience hitting both of these?

Feel, launch, spin, offset, forgiveness, turf interaction, looks, etc...

Yup I've played both. I'm actually gaming the 302's once again.

Feel is too close to call. I give the edge to the 302's. The ONOFF Forged is softer all over the face but the rewarding impact of the 302's is an addiction especially with a nice shaft.

Launch the 302's fly a hair lower.

Forgiveness goes to the ONOFF's and by a decent margin.

Turf interaction It really depends on your turf.

Looks, that's so personal. I'm biased towards the ONOFF's because I have been looking at the 302 style design for over 6 years.

Well as long as they are the softest ever iron (i'm hearing this), they're more forgiving than the 302's by a good margin and they have more offset, i'm in!

What shaft would you recommend for these? I'm thinking C-Tapers, Shimada Pro's or Tours, Modus 3's, or Crazy Tour Seekers or whatever they're called. I could also put my Program 130s in them, too...

Hey Rob,

Thanks for participating in the blog! That was a fun read.

In regards to shaft selection. I think the Program 130's would numb up feel a bit. Do you get the boardy sensation with those? I know I did when playing them although very accurate with a slight gain in distance over steel.

I also think KBS lack's superb feel as well but to each is own. Never tried the C-Tapers. I'm waiting to shaft up the Crazy shafts as well. It's been a bit hot where I'm at so I dread getting out these days... Guess I will just work on the new TSG..;)

For me and this is so personal but NS Pro has the best feel imo. I'm actually still a fan of the NS950 provided its in a low launching head but that's not very fun is it.

Shimada's are good but don't have that buttery feel the NS Pro's have. One negative for me is that my dispersion is wider with NS shafts, even the 1150's.

My current gamers are soft stepped NS1150's in AF302's. I would jump to the ONOFF's in a heart beat.

Chris,

I thought you were gaming the Crazy CBI80 limiteds in your irons? What happened? I've also found that so far the NS Pros deliver better than any other shaft as far as blending feel and performance, everyone prefers different things in a shaft, but I have tried pretty much every low or mid launching steel shaft on the market, besides the Crazy Target Tours which should arrive tomorrow :), and from what I've found, the NS Pros(heavier stiffer models) seem to deliver a nice ball flight for a harder hitter or better player with out being overly harsh like a lot of other shafts on the market.... KBS would finish second and only because I got a chance to hit the C-Tapers the other day and I like them ALOT better than the KBS Tours, ball flight is very nice, launches pretty low and stays nice and strong throughout, feels pretty good, but the heavier NS Pro models still feel nicer with a similar ball flight, but that's really just my own personal opinion...

Great writeup, thanks! Have you hit many graphite offerings? What's your swingspeed/swing style?

the modus 3 in the 302s are awesome. feel is superb and i cant imagine anything softer.

i think nspros and epons are butter especially in the 302s. they feel better in the 302s than

in the yonex ryo nanos for sure.

i placed the program 130 in the 302 3i and man was it super boardy. totally dead sensation

i know the shaft was stout but did it feel awful. i can already imagine how my suited flex 6.0

would feel, muted in a neg way.

i have no experience with the onoff but you cant go wrong with a soft japanese forging and a

very smooth powerful kicking nspro!

I haven't hit any of the high end JDM graphite shafts..... Yet.... Lol...I've always played steel in my irons, and if I don't find the holy Grail in steel, the CBI80 limiteds are looking mighty fine...,

My driver SS gets anywhere from 108-114 depending on how I'm feeling, Ive gotten on a launch monitor and cranked it up as high as 121, but I lose a lot of control, and for me control and the ability to get the shape I want shot to shot is way more important to me personally than a few more MPHs, I normally don't play the stiffest flex I possibly can because a slightly softer flex let's me slow things down a bit and get smoother if my timing is off or I'm not playing well... swing style is semi aggressive overall, very aggressive through the ball(I didn't intend for that to rhyme). My plane is in between steep and shallow slightly more shallow though, for years I had a very flat swing plane, I had always modeled my swing after Ben Hogan's(or tried to ha), but this year I worked a lot with my swing coach to produce a slightly more upright plane to improve versatility, its also made good ball striking simpler which is nice, and has let me swing with a little less effort...

I was for a while and they feel really nice, easy on the joints but they were in a set of proto yururi's that didn't pack enough forgiveness for me. I ended up pulling them and forgot I had them. Ended up selling them. If I were to critique them I would say distance and feel A+. the only negative for me was my shots would leak right sometimes and I had a hard time putting a draw on the ball.

Cool, I'm happy to hear good things about them, if I do give graphite a go, those shall be the first ones I go for, might as well start at the top..... And I really can't say enough good things about the Crazy shafts I have tried so far, in the next day or so I'll post a review of a driver I received yesterday, it's a very unconventional setup for me based on what I have played in the past, but it's magic, seriously magic.... I'll say this, it's a Crazy shaft and a Crazy head.... Pure perfection... I feel like I'm going off on a bunch of tangents on this thread, so I apologize to the OP for getting off topic, I haven't hit the 302s or the OnOff forged so I can't really say anything about the original topic of the thread.... The OnOffs seem to be kinda the irons of the moment that everyone who hits them falls in love with them and has nothing but great things to say, so I'm pretty sure you can't go wrong with em.
