Shankopotamus
I've been gaming the 'ilima in an AF-101 for a couple of seasons now. I was actually fit for this shaft by a Golf Digest top 50 fitter, who is also one of the few Epon dealers stateside (east coast). I'm now in the midwest. Today, during my lunch break, I stopped into my local Golfsmith and jumped onto their launch monitor with my Epon and a Yamaha V201 fitted with an DI7. Both shafts are stiff (instead of reg) flex b/c I prefer dispersion over a little more length. I really can go either way with my SS. My intention was to pull the DI7 and sell it or something b/c I thought it would be too much shaft for me: heavier weight and touted to be low spin. I don't swing that fast (95 SS), and with a smooth transition, I typically need some help with spin to keep the ball in the air. My on-course experience with my Epon-ilima combo yields about 235-250 yards, depending on conditions. I can typically fly it around 230. And these were the same yardages that I was seeing on the LM at Golfsmith today. I actually hit a couple 260+, which I take with a grain of salt. But surprisingly, and really excitedly, when I swung the Yamaha-DI7 combo, WHOA!! Yes, this was my first experience with either brand, but hey, I was knocked straight out of my socks. My avg numbers with the Yamaha was 265 yds, 2000 rpm, 12* launch, with 250ish carry distance. I hit a few 280+ with the Yamaha, which I also take with a grain of salt. Now, in all fairness, my buddy at Golfsmith did say that I was hitting range balls, which are harder than the balls that I normally game, so I should add about 300 more rpm to my real life figures. But I don't know. I can't discern whether these numbers are for real or not. The numbers that I got with the Epon are very similar to my real life numbers. But the Yammy just tore it up by 15, sometimes 20+ yards. Can I trust these numbers? How do you guys think I would fair with a DI6 in the Yammy. I'm so loyal to my 101, but I'm sorry to say, she might have just got kicked out the bag. Oh, and the feeling on the Yamaha is definitely no slouch. Perfect, just the way I like it. Pretty similar to the 101 actually, or maybe I'm just dull. It doesn't really matter, the numbers speak for themselves.
robbie
I would take those numbers with a grain of salt......haha and then you can sell me the yamaha......Those numbers of 230 yard carry sound pretty maxed out for a 95mph swing.....I dont think a shaft change is going to net 20 yards of carry, I have swung numerous shafts and have founf the ilima to give very very very nice Carry numbers.....It would be amazing to be able to carry 250 and roll out to 280 at a 95mph swing speed......The only way this makes sense is if you are actually swinging the Yamaha V201 faster becuase of the length or weight of shaft or head aerodynamics or both. As for Di6 and Di7, they are very diffeent creatures, the Di6 plays with a lot more kick than the Di7........My shaft rotation includes the Attas Version 1 in 7s and 8s and 6s in the Version 2 as well as the Ali Islei in 73s and 83s and the AD Di7 and Di6 and Di8. * or the question might be....is Yamaha > Epon ? FatMan
Just my 2 cents. In my experience, Golfsmith launch monitors have much to be desired. I would try to find a trackman or flightscope in your area to verify your numbers.
IshikawaFAN
You should consider a Kai li 60 or motore speeder vc 6.1 regular with a 9-10* head...
robbie
Hmmmmmm a Epon Af 101 with a Di6 has lots of potential to be a bomber !
IshikawaFAN
Not with his swingspeed. Highly recommend fubuki k 60 regular. Good luck.

Shankopotamus
Ya, my bubble soooo got bursted, haha. Well, I'm going to leave them as is and take them both out to an outdoor range that has a slightly elevated tee box and the field next week. That'll be the real test. I'll report back. As for Di6 and Di7, they are very diffeent creatures, the Di6 plays with a lot more kick than the Di7. So, you're saying the 6 produces significantly more spin than the 7? +TourSpecGolfer
Yes the 6 feels more lively and has very barely slightly higher spin. The 7 more stable and stout feeling imo.
Shankopotamus
The 7 felt smooth as is. The 6 must really kick. I've been thinking about my this LM experience. The numbers with my Epon were pretty much spot on. I'm just wondering why the Yammy numbers were considerably higher. I'm losing sleep over this. With my SS, if I can hit consistently send it 265, I'm golden, espeically with where I play out in the midwest where there is sooooo much wind.
