shacco
Had a chance to hit the above mentioned 7 irons on a flight scope indoors. The onoff and the fourteen were shafted with the ns pro 950 stiff and the yamaha with dynamic gold standard shaft. Unfortunately, the heads were taped up quite heavily , so feel could not be transfered one to one. Just a quick information on myself. I'm about a 18 hcp and a driver ss of about 100 mph with an avarage tempo. So this might be more interesting to the mere mortals between us that can't hit 300 yard drives. My hcp is mostly due to lack of playing and therefore poor driving and putting. Iron play is prerty good. I started off with the onoff. Like the looks of it a lot. Not too small but also not like a shovel. Same goes for the top line. It gives you enough confidence without scaring the hell out if you. With my current irons (bridgestone j36 pocket cavities) I hit the 7 iron something like 150 yards. Not sure how much of that is carry coz i have never been to a launch monitor with mine. That is on course experience. First hit on the flight scope with the onoff showed 170 yards carry dead staight with a nice high but still penetrating ball flight. Was kind of embarassed because that shot was so good. The I thought maybe the numbers were juiced up or it was a lucky shot:) Second and 3rd hit same thing. Then I started thinking, maybe were on to something here. I hit a few more balls with the same results. I don't really want to elaborate much o feel since they were haevily taped to protect the face but they felt very soft which i like. I think for my ss the shaft suits me very well. A lot of feel to it which I'm not used to since i play project x shafts which are quite harsh. All in all, I was really impressed. But i was still not sure how to judge the unbelievably good numbers. Second of was the fourteen. Looks wise also very sexy. A slightly smaller and more compact shape but not by much. Definetly less forgiving and harder to hit than the onoffs in my opinion. Trajectory was a tad higher but not as penetrating. Distance was way shorter than with the onoffs. Averaging 151 carry. Feel was also good but not as nice as with the onoffs. I have to say these were not for me. Last came the yamaha tours. Much smaller package and slighly heavier feel. Felt also very soft. Distance was better than the fourteens and shorter than the onoffs. Averaging 163 carry with a much lower ball flight tha. The other 2. Not sure if this is due to the shaft. Schaft felt dead comparing to the ns pro 950. I was surprised to see that these were actually quite forgiving given their size. I felt these were even more forgiving than the fourteens. Might have been that these just suited me better somehow, but between the fourteen and the yammi tours i would have chosen the yammis even though, i never saw myself as hitting anything that is branded tour. Final subjective conclusion of the session: Onoff Forged were the winners hands down for me. I love Yamaha gear and i really wanted to like the yamahas. But the numbers couldn't lie. Distance, dispersion, forgiveness and feel were unbeatable. At least for my game. They seem to be a perfect match for me. Not sure what made them.be so much longer than the others, but it worked. I'm guessing the lofts are stronger. Second place goes to the yammi tours 2011. I happily game these as well, but the onoffs were just in another league for me. Third to me were the fourteens. They are certainly good irons. But somehow they did not suit me. Edited March 24, 2012 by shacco
bogeydog
Check out the lofts of each. Maybe that had something to do with the distance gaps. The s200 shafts in the Yamaha irons do them so much disservice. I am not sure why they use them as stock.
shacco
3 degrees difference between the onoffs and the fourteens explains a lot. But roughly 20 yards???

FatMan
Nice review. I think that if the Yamaha was shafted with the 950gh as well, you would get better numbers although, the OnOff would have the edge in the forgiveness category. Great distance, feel, and control. A little high though but I am not sure if I will change.
+TourSpecGolfer
OnOFF Forged is an amazing iron for a wide range of player. The Yamaha is a low capper cb. You being an 18 it was a good decision to go with the OnOFF.
DaleUK
I'll second that about the Onoffs, first round with mine today, under match conditions... Yes I hit a few Duff shots but most of the shots ,were unreal, I don't know if it's the Onoffs heads or maybe the Modus3 shafts but these are a serious bit of kit!! Quick picture of my approach 7iron shot, from around 160yards Ps mines the one near the Pin!!
shacco
Great shot, Dale:) I do like the Yamahas and my heart says i should go with them. But my head says I'm better of with the onoffs. Hmmm, we'llsee.
shacco
Just on a side note. I had also had a chance to hit the ns pro modus3 shafts a few weeks earlier. I heard many good things and again, I really wanted to like it. But I believe people with my ss should stay away from it. While it is certainly a good shaft, it needs much more effort to make it work. I have always been playing shafts around 110g. I'm considering now switching to a lighter shaft after testing the ns pro 950 in irons. Much easier and longer.
supo
hey 950 s irons are magical. when i get older u can guarantee ill be playing these. was tempted to keep them in my tourstage 905s i nthe4-6 but the monacco is just sturdier. the feel of the 950 is unequaled. such good shafts dont be worried by not liking the 11 yamahas either , they are yamahas most difficlt tour model. they are very much for the low handicapper. more so than the othermodels persoanlly ive grown to like them the best. they are low bullet shooters. use whats the best for ur game u know what i think of yammy product, but im using srixon and yonex irons now. the yamms will get thier day agn.. but not right now play what u play best
zwan
Hey shacco, wie geht's? I have started the season two weeks ago with my new iron / shaft combo and must say that if you could get hold of a set of Yamaha's with a decent shaft you would love them like I do. I have a SS of 105 and they just feel great with the Shimada K's tour shaft in S flex. These shafts give it that extra kick I have been looking for and they go miles down the fairway, I'm telling you. I have played last years ONOFF and can only say that they are very well made irons indeed. Enjoy the season, whatever you are going to play... bogeydog
I am killing these Yamaha irons. I can't explain why however I am 3/4 club longer with theses. The 2012 tour is much more forgiving than previous models. These are shared with NS1050s.
+TourSpecGolfer
Great Shot Dale! I still love the NS950/1050/1150. I have no issues playing NS950 in my irons, feels outstanding, it's a stock offering and it lands soft on greens. I can forward press and lower the flight or pop the ball up high with ease. I notice I hit longer irons easier with the 950 as well. On Yamaha irons. I have never played a full round with the Tour's. BogeyDog is making me wish I kept the set. V-Forged non tour is pretty outstanding as well.
shacco
How do the onoffs compare to the 2012 yamahas v non tour and maybe throw in the tourstage 905 cb? Forgiveness and feel wise? Edited March 27, 2012 by shacco

+TourSpecGolfer
How do the onoffs compare to the 2012 yamahas v non tour and maybe throw in the tourstage 905 cb? Forgiveness and feel wise? V-Forged is a fantastic iron, not as soft as the ONOFF but it feels superb. It's very forgiving maybe just a hair less than the ONOFF. So I say the V-Forged wins in setup and soft/solid feel while the ONOFF in forgiveness and softness. 905CB is pro level again. New X-Blade 707 is worth considering as I think you will need more forgiveness.
zwan
Which Shimada model are you playing? Please tell about them please. I play the Shimada K's Tour 120 in S-flex standard lenght (5i = 38 inches). They give my swing that little extra pop and when I concentrate on my preshot routine I can't go wrong - slow backswing and then booooooooooooooooooooom! It's like as if I added some extra SS. But on the other side I'm not even swinging out of my shoes. It's simply fantastic. I'm not sure if I can put in words what I'm experiencing here. And I have only had the chance to play 3 times 9-holes so far plus a couple of range sessions. I'm not as experienced as most of the members at TSG due to living in Switzerland where it is nearly impossible to play JDM stuff and I'm a hacker considering my handicap but I'm certain that at the end of this season I'll be playing on a total different level than pre Yamaha time... Im really exited. The shafts look terrific too by the way. A smoky kind of finish to them. I think it the whole package that makes the difference to what I was used to. I played KZG Forged evolutions before and I really liked them alot but they play nowhere close to the Yamahas.

shacco
Got a good deal on the onoffs with the ns pro 950 stiff shafts and couldn't resist and pulled the trigger. Played 18 holes with it and couldn't be happier. Feel is nice and soft of the face and very forgiving. Size of the head is slightly on the larger side. Bigger than my previous irons which was actually surprising. Actually this is the only downside to these irons. A more comapct head is just more apealling. The 8 - PW do not feature a tungsten weigted sole/cavity like the lower lofted irons and I they do feel a little different. They feel even softer. I really love this feel. I played terrible, but that was just the indian not the arrow. I think the irons are great and will help my game a lot since they make the game easier for me due to the increased distance. Easily 1 to 1,5 clubs longer than my previous irons. I know that has a lot to do with the stronger lofts but that changes your mindset. It's a lot easier on your mind when you have a 6 iron in your hand instead of a 5 or even a 4 iron. Since I really played bad, I could fully test the club's forgiveness;) They are really very forgiving. Shots hit slightly thin travel almost with no distance lost. Shots on the toe also feel very, very stable and don't lose much distance. To me they are still workable even given their size. Drawing was much easier than fading for me though. Might have something to do with the shaft. Feels somwhow easier to turn over. Really like the feel of the shaft. So smooth. Difference of night and day comparing to the project x flighted I played before. I was even surprised I could keep the flight low if I wanted. Really look forward to playing this year. Hopefully, I will have more time and get to play more than in the previous years.
