All JDM *except* my Driver...Which one to get?

Recommended Posts

I have completely converted to JDM equipment save for my driver, with which I have been driving the best of my life with this setup so I have held off on changing. The most consistently in the fairway and consistent good length of anything I have ever played. In the past 3 years I went from an old TM to a G10 to a G15 to a 910D2 now to the R11S.

Current setup:

R11S with RIP Phenom 70 Tour X playing at 45".

SS 108-109 and 112-114 when I step on it. Generally hit the ball high but the setup I have now is about right height and good ball flight.

Don't want to go longer than 45" and no shorter than 44.5".

Not going to spend over $1000 for the setup and less expensive is better. We all know well and good there isn't that much better about the newer drivers than older. I would like to maybe find something a couple years old that is a very good proven driver that would fit me well, that way if it doesn't work I don't take a huge loss on it.

Thoughts?

Well if it has to be = or shorter than 45" and at least 45.5" I don't think I can help you. :tsg_smilie_smile2:

*Couldn't resist.

Supo has, might be had, an EPON with Crazy Boron shaft that hits your price point and might be just the ticket...

Also a couple of Yamaha Drivers in the BST that would be a great place to start. I don't think

I've ever read a post where somebody has said they don't like a Yamaha Driver.

Brand new Kamui Works Ray driver head, built to your spec, with either a brand new Diamana or Graphite Design shaft, all for less than $1000. That's my choice. Best feeling driver I've ever hit. And longest.

Hi

I have always said that for any double figure handicap and above the Ryoma should be first port of call.

Quite long but just straight and keeps you in play much more often.

If you don't get on with it then try one of the multitude of class offerings available from the Japanese market.

The Ryoma is just starting to come up on the BST section on a more regular basis so you should be able to pick one up in your price range.

My general problem is that even though I may be a double digit handicapper, my issues with my game don't mirror the normal problems that most mid to high handicappers have with their games. I don't need any help launching the ball in the air, I don't need any help with a higher ball flight, and I don't need a closed clubface to help me square it at impact. etc.

I am a strong guy and have a high swing speed and don't have any problem with getting the ball in the air. What I normally need in a driver is some side to side and top to bottom forgiveness and a face that isn't too draw biased.

In my past experience what I have found in clubs geared to people with my handicap is that they address a lot of problems that I don't have. I am all for trying a Ryoma driver, but if it's one of these clubs that someone is recommending me because of my handicap instead of what I actually need based on my physique and the way I swing a golf club, then I don't need one.

From the reading I have been doing it, the Econ 151 and 102, as well as the ryoma D1 seem to be the clubs that fit me the best on paper.

Yup, cant go wrong with Yamaha. Tour versions if you like smaller heads and non tour for more forgiveness. Go great with GD shafts, maybe the new z9003X for you. Don't know if you'll get more performance compared with your TM. That head must be darn good given that so many non-TM tour players use it.
