Got my Yamaha wedges, 21* ute, 3-wood and Tour driver the other day and took them out yesterday. The wedges: very nice-looking, Modus 3 shafts. A little bigger in size than I was expecting. Soft feel, but not as soft as the 2012 Tour irons. Only hit full shots and some big flops because I was at a local range with no short game area. And the wind was 25-30 MPH from the right so it was kinda hard to tell distance but they seemed right in line with my Miura y- and c-grind wedges. Faces a little smaller than the Miuras. The grind is pretty similar, both have heel and toe relief and similar bounce, but a little more trailing edge relief with the Miuras. Really nice wedges.

The 21* ute. Also really nice-looking (does Yam make anything that isn't?), with Nippon steel hybrid shaft. Muted but crisp contact (similar to Tourstage ute in feel but quieter) and easy to launch. Easy to set up, sits about a degree or 2 open. Easy to hit either way and punch. A really versatile. Distance, I dunno cuz it was so damn windy.

The 3-wood: Again, great-looking club, got it with the upgraded GD shaft (MX-615 ?). Shallow head, super easy to launch high, although that might be partly the shaft, which I'll prob replace with a GD SF-7. The one in it's a little light and sloppy. But the head feels and looks great and is pretty forgiving so it should be a gamer.

Ahhh, the Tour driver: Don't know why I even got it cuz I like the 2012 Tour driver so much. (well, I know why, don't we all?) Its really similar to last year's as far as the head. Great shape, great feel. Got it with the new GD GT shaft in stiff, 10* like last year's. At address, the 2012 and 2013 are hard to tell apart, except the 2013 sits perfectly square whereas the 2012 sits about a degree or two open. This shaft feels a little softer just waggling it, might be the lower kick point? Launches a tad higher than the 2012 with the GD BB shaft, and feels softer at impact as well. And it's just a beautiful shaft, a less bright, silvery blue, with a dark silver upper area and a very subtle small, lime green stripe in the striped area. Might be the gamer on calm days when I want high bombs. Again, couldn't tell afa distance cuz of the wind and $#!++y range balls, but it surely seemed adequate. I can't see how it would be shorter than last year's, which was plenty long while not being the longest I've ever hit.

All in all, I'm sure I'll prob game the driver and 3-wood (re-shafted) for 2013. Gonna have to compo the hybrid with my Tourstage on the course, but may use it as well. The wedges, well, don't know. Probably alternate them with the Miura y- and c-grind for a few rounds and see which one likes to put it closer to the hole. But it's all great equipment that will perform for anyone who knows how to use it. Couldn't find fault with any of it. Never do with Yamaha, they may offer the best line-up, top to bottom, of anybody out there. I've been alternating Miura baby blades and 2012 Yamaha tour irons for a while and may even go to the Yammies for next year. Their stuff just flat-out performs.

I'm going out of town for a few days but I'll try when I get back. I'm not very good at getting pics online, started a photobucket acct but can't seem to get it right very often. Too old I guess for this new stuff. But I'll try.

One of my complaints with the manufacturers is that they don't ever want to show you how it looks at address especially with irons and wedges. The most important view! That's where a club's look can make it or break it for me.

No worries buddy, have a safe trip!! :) I definitely agree, the address view is the most important view of all.

I apologize to all those waiting.

This must be Yamaha's most hectic launch ever and so many of our orders were pushed back.

Several members have gotten their tour irons, standard irons, fairway woods, utilities and wedges.... a large number of tour sets to still go out (many next week) and tour drivers start shipping next week as well.

As you can imagine, I have been hounding, stalking, and bitching to Yamaha for weeks. (^_^)

Absolutely mate. I haven't hit my 2011 3 wood yet as it's meant to be a crimbo pressie, but the 2008 driver is great. Looking forward to comparing my versions with your 2013's

rightyo chaps FINALLY GOT A FEW MINS AWAY FORM SCREAMING MULTiple FAMILIES TO give u all a pretty good update on how these babies go against ...well........... a LOT..!

been gaming....,

epon 301 technica------monacco X

callaway quad dot 2009 forged tours.-------KBS c-tapers protos

epon personals-------Ns protos c10x (HEAVY..!)

yonex ezone--------Ns proto c10x

yamaha 2009 forged------kbs tour nickel protos

all of these clubs IMO are

AS GOOD AS ANY CLUB that has ever been made

theeres no better here fellas

theres just degrees of superbness !

ive pelnty more here but i didnt get a chance to hit them .as 5 days in tassy with the yamms put paid to that idea

so onto the yammys...........,

firstly, the combo of the diamana thumps.. firstkly they play 3/4 oVER my normal length

38.5 inch 5i thats MASSIVE to me.

secondly.. they clubs are prob 1* too flat for ME

def at least 1 * ,minimum too flat.

didnt realise how much till iu got back to syd and gamed the epons . wow boy was a huge differnce.

so th combo of the diamanas is an excewllent choice....its NOT 100% ideal for the conditions i was playing in, 50 k/ph winds. in fact they were def NOT ideal.

but in NORMAL conditions these are superb clubs.. they lack of feel in your elbow is a marvellous surprise... the lack of bone shattering jarring on miss**ts is simpy delicious....

however........................

after going back to my NS protos for the first time in yonks......

STEEL is my DEAL.

i will easily say steel in wind in unmatchable /unequlable.

period.

and ill say the c-tapers im trying to hate are absolutelly sensational they are pefect in wind id say..................... the best.................. with the c-10s.................. the best.

the length of the yama blades is a nice foil for the miniscule blades im used to playing.

they are long.

the sole is what id call medium width and its not uber dynamic like say a tourstage 905 or a miuraism. the milling on the face is MAGNIFICENT it seems to hold the ball for longer and kinda make it easier to direct the shot .

all clubs shud have this milling its a game changer

i was tempted to pull the shafts but i figured i have so many steels . these will be a nice easy playing club..... il get them re weighted weh ni get bakc to tokyo to see if i can cut a cpl of cms off them as i didnt like the longness of them nad il DFINALTY get them bent upright 1*

ive gamed them 7 rounds in al conditions now and i like them a heck of a lot

they are totaly differnt beasts to the older tour models.. they areNOT better. they are differnt.

i still love the old tours and these wont affect guys likeness of the older models 1 iota i dont think

they are not in the same mould at all.

they were nt the best clubs for hitting off hard pan, the thick sole put paid to that

they will be superb for japan conditions.. these will be absolutely magnificent!

the only question remaining for me is

whether to get them with the NS shafts aswell.

i rate these clubs in my top drawer.

they arnt no1

and i know everyone wants to know these or the personals.............

my honest answer is ...

both. seriously.

the epons are chunkier and punchier. the yams are more finicky

if i was given one set only to play i wouldnt mind either honestly.

they are not really similar.

i think i need to cut the shafts shorter and bend the lofts in the yams

and im 99.99999999% sure this wil make the yammys.. well ver yhard to remove from bag.!

As always, great write up Stew. Am curious on the "in the wind" comment. Do they launch too high, or something else? Is it possible the S flex is a contributing factor there?

If you put the Personals and these Yams on similar planes, then if that holds for me too, the RomaRo blades might be my club...

Right ...

Update:

I've just played another 8 holes with these clubs...

Feel is good but the Standard Shaft offering in the 3 wood seems super super SOFT!

It's something that I must try and get used to, as its spoiling the the experience !!

The 21* Hybrid is turning out to be an excellent choice

Again feel is good and its a point and shoot go to club!!

they spun quite a lot more than the steels did hitting back into the teeth of the breeze.

i only noticed this when i palyed the NS protos c-10s and the c-tapers. AFTER i returned.

ive played nothing anywhere near as good in the puff as the c-tapers and the c-10s.

looks like that chapter of my seartch has CLOSED for ever.

for ""ordinary"" everyday stuff tho the diamana thumps are magnificent.

long. storng. non invasive on yr joints.

only thhing i can say is they are a bit light

im itching to get the yamahahas bent 1* tomorrow so ia can play them on saturday back here in japan.

winther golf just got a set of irons me thinks!

confirmed by clubbuilder last night that my strike zone on the sole of the yam13 tours was on the toe which means they are way to flat for my swing

the5i is 38.25 inch he says by straighteneing them 1* upright they willl effectively play to 38inch equivalent so no need to cut or alter them which wud adverlsy affect the swing weight adn make them WAY too light.

thibking this might sort them out a bit for me

Hmmm I'm going to play my 5 iron 38" which is 1/4 in h shorter than my Onoff's!

I think T said standard was like 37.3/4 so I'm going 1* up right too..
