Mini Review : George Spirits Modus 3 Style 1

I see some of his mono line putters that are supposed to be made this year being offered. They also claim su303 forged steel. I read some threads in the past questioning this. Does he really use su303 or normal carbon steel? And does he make in Japan or Taiwan? On his website, some models state made in Japan and some models state made in Taiwan. Who forges for him?

Are his putters any good?

Thanks

He's no longer with us, but he's here in Spirit.

Sorry, couldn't resist. :)

Yup GS is still around. He just released a new set of irons.

If it says made in Japan I would believe it and if it says SUS303 I would believe that as well.

When you say who forges his product, It depends on which product. I'm not 100% sure. The irons and wedges somewhere in Himeji I would guess.

Thanks for chiming in. Do you know where his putters are forged and who does it for him?

PLayed a round and a half with this but before I get tho the review. The day I got it, I went to the fitters and put on the UST Frequency Filter shaft any the Iomic Abslute grip.

Head weight was 351grams so 3 grams off the stated 354 grams but this looks a beaut and the fitter and other customers there also felt the same.

The feel is definitely on the firmer side and putts off the sweet spot are clickish sounding BUT they hold the line! Putts on the sweet spot, due to the sound slot, had a high resonating pitch and felt softer. I'm not sure what kind of mill pattern is used here but it definitely put on a much better roll than the C-Grooves of my yes callie. No skidding!

Still getting used to it but was quite happy with the results of the first round. Although I had 2 3 putts, I had 5 one putts, the rest 2 putts and 2 birdies so 3 putts for 18. Not too shabby!

After my Romaro H irons, I think this is my second best acquisition during this silly season of experimentation!

............... i just dunno about this guy...............ive never seemed overly convinced.

funny thing is im not sure why.............

i just dont get a warm fuzzy feeling as with other makers

but if its good so far then happy days.

i think i have a guage design which i think is/was his line form a few years ago..

if it is........ then its a sensational putter sus 303.. and its def 303.

Yeah, it does seem like he's not had much luck on the business side but I think his designs are still good. Perhaps he should leave the busines aspect to those who know and just stick to designing good clubs.

I know George Takei pretty well for over 10 years. He IS a fantastic designer! Better than most.

What I respect the most is he creates new designs and always comes out with new product and believes in quality.

When it comes to the JDM putter industry he is a big part of it. Way back with the original gauge design he got Darren Eggars together as his first designer, then Masayuki Sasaya of GF, then David Whitlam of Gauge Design USA all worked for George Takei at some point.

Gauge Design JPN went out of biz, then came G-Field which was a fantastic company.. I still believe the Premium Zone putters are some of the best ansers made in terms of feel and roll, and Now onto George Spirits. It appears he has learned a lot over the years on how to handle his business but only time will tell. Bottom line is the guy makes good product.

Now I do have to admit there has always been controversy that follows him due to business relations but this time he is partnered with a huge Japanese investor not individual personalities... He is also releasing products at a more conservative pace.

To answer your question xxio, GT has designed everything since the later years of GDJ into G-Field into G.Spirits, I've seen him design, work with cad programmers & grind irons, wedges, and putters. Sasaya already owned Golds Factory before working with George, Darren Eggars is out of the industry and David Whitlam still runs Gauge USA.

That's what I meant..... in much lesser words LOL.

He's always come out with good stuff IMO. The GD MB1 irons are lengendary as well as epitome of soft solid for me. And for MBs, they were so easy to launch.

I hope George Spirits works out for him this time round but even if it doesn't, he still comes out with good stuff.
