MoreBeerBetterGolf
I'm kind of toying with the idea of getting a driving iron but don't have much experience with them. Been debating loft and I already have a 21* egglet so I think I'd go in the 17-18* range and have a different club for different things. Looking for some feedback and experience and if its worth even messing with. Thanks guys
vertigo88
With lofts of your wanting down to 17-18 I think your only choice is the zero from Yonex. I know Miura has one as well, but not in that low of a loft.
RIduffer
Curious why you would put the driving iron as a lower lofted club than the egglet. Would the the PRGR would be more forgiving than the a driving iron and hence would want it to be the longest club.
RLL33
The Callaway X-Prototype comes in 18, 21, and 24, I believe. I really liked the way the demo felt at the shop, and have an 18 on the way. Currently playing the Miura HB3 at 20* and love it, particularly out of the rough. It is a hybrid, but shaped much more like an iron than most, and the feel is exquisite. ant
it would make sense to you if you carry and find the need to play a regular 2 or 3 iron (depending on your lofts) often enough but often decide against it because it can get dicey. they just basically more forgiving replacements. miura doesnt make their driving iron anymore afaik but i second that their mg hybrid is a great club, i dont think the feel is anything special but its impossible to mis**t it almost out of anything. MoreBeerBetterGolf
Good responses. Basically we have a lot of wind and I have seen some guys using them for short par 4s to keep tee shots out of the wind amongst other things. I hate using a long iron off a tee and my fairways and egglet are too high for ideal. Reason the egglet is higher lofted than the utility iron is that it is what I already have...my 24* iron is easy to hit...so I would need to go below it. Which would also aid in the lower launch and whatnot. I'm just playing around with ideas.
Ian-500
I've just gamed my 21* and 24* Mizuno driving irons and they were better than my equivalent 3i and 4i off the tee and out of the short rough. I suggest you get the 18* and try it out. My model should be cheap enough off fleabay for you to test before going for a more expensive or up to date driving iron. Ian-500
I'm done with driving irons..... What don't you like about them idrive?
idrive
probably as simple as I hit hybrids better and FW's even better still. Also, I can't hit them off the ground and they are not long enough off of the tee to do me any good. Too many other clubs I can put in the bag and make better use of. Mental at this point?? Probably
+TourSpecGolfer
RomaRo iBrid is a sleeper. Highly recommend this club.
MoreBeerBetterGolf
Chris how is the feel of this club compared to the carbon forged driving irons. I really like the looks of the Fourteen HI-610h T.S. Hybrid and the Yonex Zero as well.
xerobound
I think the Romaro i-bird is a great club for the wind. It's compact and easy to control, especially trajectory. It has a firm and "crisp" feel. It feels very powerful at impact. And would recommend the 17* to pierce through the wind!
MoreBeerBetterGolf
Thanks Tats. No shortage of wind around here.
Blader-X
I've dabbled with them from time to time, but probably like Jeff, just never really liked them as much as say a 17 degree hybrid. I can hit it low with a piercing trajectory much easier than I could a driving iron. I had a Miura which was good, but I remember it having offset which didn't set well with me. My RC is better to my eye. The other thing I found was that I could hit low running 3 irons much more consistent than a driving iron. That being said though, I do highly suggest that you try one. You won't know it'll work in your game unless you give it a go. If you do, let us know how it goes.
MoreBeerBetterGolf
I hit the Callaway x utility today with the stock GD shaft. Didn't care for it at all. Even hitting premium balls it didn't feel that great on well struck shots and missed hits felt awful. I wasn't really warmed up whatsoever just grabbed it and hit about 10 shots but there wasn't anything that got me excited about it. MoreBeerBetterGolf
Don't make any buying decisions based on my input. A lot of people are liking them but it just didn't turn me on.
freehb04
I had c's old labo spec driving iron it was 19* and I put in an Aerotech i80 stiff shaft in it. that was as good as I've ever had...wish i hadnt sold it! wish i could find another one...didn't care for the fourteen or mizuno I had. the bazooka, which was crap on a stick actually worked for me. I may get a zero around 21* to go w the nano setup...I want the egglet out it's just the most consistent club in my bag but I get made fun of and I'm very insecure as I'm already the shortest player in my group...this is worse as I'm also the biggest, most athletic guy in my group...it's a good thing I get up and down about 50% of the time or I'd have to quit golf and that could mean full onset alcoholism... I play a long course and only hit about 3 greens a round. so without my egglet I am a little lost... I want to be manly and a driving iron is unquestionably more manly than the egglet... coops1967
Interesting how long irons/utility irons are coming back again. With the modern iron designs it seems to me they can be designed to offer almost all the forgiveness of a hybrid with the easier lie adjustment and for some, just easier to the eye - in the same way hybrids offered almost all the forgiveness of a fairway wood (what happened to the 5 wood, it's gone so out of fashion...) in a more compact body. Any way you look at it, it means more choice for us - so it comes down to finding what works best for yourself. I'll just namecheck the Epon 901 here - been available for some time now... ahead of its time in some ways, you could say. Fabulous. I do love my 301 4 iron also, so i like long irons... and going from 23degree loft 4 iron to the 19 degree 901 is ideal. Only shame as far as a more driving iron is there is no lower loft option for the 901... i'd love a 16degree one with say a nunchuk hybrid shaft, as a 3 wood replacement. I currently don't put my 3 wood in my bag - when i started golf, i left out the driver and always used a 3 wood for many, many years... ( a Sam Snead persimmon head, steel shaft ) , in fact so many years i think i've used up all my allotted lifetimes worth of decent 3 wood shots, and can only now produce awful hooks and a range of foozled shots with them! some kind of mental 3 wood yips... so help me. A nice driving AF901 would be great... and a lot easier than this beauty
