Posted March 14, 201311 yr comment_203332 This occurred to me while I have been shopping for NOS (New Old Stock) wedges. I am an Am, so the groove rules will not be applying to me for a while. I love the spin I get from the older wedges. I tried the new ones but can't play all the shots I normally get to do with the older wedges. The ball back in stance low checker from 40-70 yards in particular. The JDM market still produces non-conforming drivers, although not many. Since it seems that they are not above making drivers that are not legal at all, why not make wedges that are in fact still legal for us Ams? Just wondering because my other wedges are pretty worn, MT28 V2s, V3s, and tour issued ('08) Fourteens, my older TS wedges. I actually put a set of Akiras that were in my guest set in play just to get that groove action back. Edited March 14, 201311 yr by xxio
March 14, 201311 yr comment_203340 Not the expert here but, It seems that by reworking the grooves to still stay conforming that they spin darn near as well as before. I think the biggest difference is the grooves aren't able to "displace" the grass as well from the longer grass when hit out of the rough. Where I think they have made up for it is with the ball. A non conforming wedge with some of the newer premium balls actually spin too much. (for me) Certainly not going to surrender my non conformers anytime soon as I still play them especially if I know the greens are quite firm. And yes, I'm a bit surprised there aren't more of the non conformers still made. I'd bet they'd be very popular.
March 14, 201311 yr comment_203344 Ease on over to the Geotech Wedge listings in the Pro Shop. You will find a slew of "U" Groove Wedges that rank with the best in spin and playability. All at very reasonable prices for forged heads that will leave you with a pocket full of money to spend on putting great Shafts in the Geotech Wedges. Geotech is still a well kept secret around these parts but their stuff is truly great.
March 14, 201311 yr comment_203365 Sky dream jump D-Tour wedges are non conforming and sharp as heck... Yururi gekku raw, most older Miura, the Kenmochi black model, all sport sharp non conforming grooves.

March 18, 201311 yr Author comment_203662 I was discussing with a friend. Basically If a wedge has older grooves that is still legal for us AMs to use BUT has been manufactured after the deadline for making those older grooves it can still be deemed illegal by the USGA for AMs to use. In fact I would even go as far o say they would be illegal if advertised as having the older non-conforming grooves. I may not like it, but it looks like my search goes on for older V3s and Callaway X Tour wedges.
March 18, 201311 yr comment_203720 I love the Yururi Raw or the Kenmochi Black model, if you want extra spin. These are very fun to play around with! The do chew the ball up real bad so make sure to bring out extra golf balls for your rounds. ;) In the right conditions, these will back up even on shorter shots!
