JGalls
Currently using the 502's and enjoying them. My first "point and shoot" iron and while the offset and large sole bothers me at times, I've been really quite pleased. Are the newer 551's worth a go? gocchin
Technically the RF551 are older than the AF502 since they are actually the AF501, that said, I actually prefer the 501 over the 502. I thought they had better feel, shape and overall performance.
vanla01
Here is a picture of the epon 503, 502 & 551 from Carlo. I believe C prefers the epon 503, more compact & less offset with same forgiveness! Edited August 2, 2013 by vanla01
wmclarenf1
My 2 cents and opinion... the newer Epon irons really aren't anywhere close to the older gen irons for ME. Finish wise, they don;t look as good to me as in te case of the 503 but that is purely personal. The 551 really also does nothing more apart from perhaps giving you a color variation which I think is actually quite nice but performance wise, nothing to add. I have hit the 551 and 503. For me, if you like the 502, save the cash or spend it on something else. Just MY opinion of course.
Spoon
Since u asked The 503s are very under rated. I like them a lot mine a lot. Dont play as much as i used to so i get along with these. Im coming from personals and crazy blades They may not feel the best (clicky hot off the face) but It makes up in length and forgivness. Feel 551>503>502 Performance 551>503>502 Length 503> 502=501 Forgivness 503>502 a tad more than 551 but not by much
JGalls
Can't imagine the 503's being longer than the 502's. I've gained a club and half in distance through the bag since switching to them. I do like the 503's have a gap wedge as it should play basically like my old PW. The specs are identical offset wise on the 503's vs the 502's. Was hoping for a touch less offset which is why I was looking at the 551's though. How are the trajectories on the 503's? Having the undercut promote a little higher? Concerned with shorter irons especially. I'm more towards a sweeper so wouldn't mind a little thinner sole or less leading edge relief. Descriptions of the 503 and 551 soles would be very helpful. Cheers guys. Edited August 2, 2013 by JGalls
Spoon
Trajectory will depend on your ss, how you compress the ball and the shaft. Il let more technical guys explain the soles.

sjdavies47
Have not used the 551s, but was did play 501 prior to my current 502s. Personally I prefer the 502s. I didn't like the 'click' of the 501 and prefer the feel of the 502. Ultimately I think it comes down to the feel you want from the iron as there wasn't much of a performance difference. +TourSpecGolfer
We get to hear what their biggest competitors and "the man" thinks about the new designs. I'll just say no one will be copying them in the foreseeable future.
gian11
I like everything about AF-503. I haven't use 551/502 but I guess if you are going to purchase a new one you won't regret AF-503, it has everything in my opinion - feel, forgiveness, looks, distance, & performance. gocchin
It'll be interesting to see how Epon evolves without their head designer, we all know Endo's manufacturing quality but I am worried new designs will be few and far in between... techbase2000
I have the 7-P 302's which are a masterpiece set. The man should get a golf award for things his group creates. I just bought the 4-6 AF-503's hoping they would imporve those irons. Liked them in the fitting but on the grass is a different story as we know. No luck. same game. My fault no doubt but the feel is definitely not the same as the 302's! Much more vibration on off-center hits. Feels like my Mizuno 53's. Center hits are very smooth; however not as smooth as the 302's. Guess I'm going to have to get better at the long irons or figure out a slight adjustment in the offset. gian11
I am a happy user of 503's. If I have to choose only 1 set, this is it for me. The Mizzy MP-53's is not even close in any category with the Epon 503's or any other JDM irons that I've hit.
totoro9
who is the designer of AF503?
+TourSpecGolfer
who is the designer of AF503? Epon's in house team with the help of Niimi Kiyonari. I've never hit them only heard the opinions of industry folk. I do really like Epons classic designs.
mpbachman
wmclarenf1, since you own the Crazy Iron Proto's and hit the AF-503s, do they compare in feel/forgiveness/etc as the design is somewhat similar (cut cavities, etc)?
