Titleist AP1 Forged Irons Korea Spec Model - Titleist Japan had the VG3 series along with the Cold Forged Vokey and full release T-MB 716 irons on top of the full selection of retail models that Titleist offers, Korea has always had only 1 exclusive model and this year again its the AP1 Forged iron but in the latest 716 series.
The AP1 Forged is a cavity back with distance and forgiveness in mind It features a deeper undercut cavity creating a low CG, the lofts are strong and both heel and toe have tungsten weights to keep MOI up. All around these are very similar to the standard release AP1's but where it differs greatly is in feel, the Korea Only AP1 "Forged" Irons feel closely related to the VG3 and T-MB irons and we are thankful for that.

Designed as Titleist's most forgiving forged CB these are mid sized irons they are not small nor are they big I would say that they cover a wide range of skill levels from pro to high handicap and what I mean by pro is senior tour level or ladies tour not so much PGA tour as those guys prefer compact sized iron heads.

With the undercut it's thin face has more rebound for faster ball speeds, with the tungsten not only is the MOI higher but weight distribution is more balanced and combine strong lofts with better ball speed and you have a recipie similar to the T-MB in that for an MB it was much longer and easier to hit than the other blades, well same here for it's size these are more forgiving than one would expect.

The 716 AP1 Forged will not be easy to get, they are only sold in Korea and not even Japan has them, TSG has only a few sets left 4-PW NS950 Regular Flex that will be added to the pro shop shortly.

Can you see the resemblance to the T-MB? It's rounded toe and thick curved angles and even face on show's they share similar DNA.

Below the address pic shows fairly minimal offset and not such a thick top line, Titleist always gets this right with a good balance between game improvement qualities yet without compromising aesthetics while you stand over the ball.

The sole is not so wide it's rounded in all corners and even features a pronounced and more rounded leading edge this is something we see more brands doing off the rack killing the edge which helps both steep and shallow swings.

Undercut on the heel side of the club head with tungsten on the toe.

The PW has no undercut design at all.

PW has a nice setup to it doesn't look like a shovel.

How would they compare to the VG3?

Chris, also, any news on what Titleist JP will be replacing the VG3 with?

Zero word on a VG3 replacement.

Compared to the VG3 this is longer, more forgiving, slightly larger head with very similar feel, I also like it a lot because the top line isn't too fat and the offset is not obscene.

Do you think more sets will be available in the future, specifically with "stiff" shafts?

Not sure sir. My suggestion is to get the R and yank the shafts.

Round #3 in the books with these, let me update my experience with them:

- R Flex Shafts would leak right for me on full swings obviously because they are NS950 Regular and I usually play stiff

- These irons are really good in softer conditions especially for steep swingers, the bounce keeps the head from digging very well

- Feel is not exactly as soft as VG3 but pretty close, less spongy, perfectly firm for a GI iron

- Size is larger than most heel to toe length and face height but soles are not super wide, nor does it have a lot of offset or a thick top line

- Distance is about 1 club up from most traditional lofted clubs

- workability will require an emphasized path or a softer flex shaft to exaggerate swing adjustments, if the shaft is too stiff don't expect much.

I'm going to be shafting these with OT105's in Stiff Flex next.
