Henry
I need an education on this topic. Who benefits from high spin and who benefits from low spin? Is spin product of shaft as well? Can drivers be high spin or low spin bias made by the manufactures?
mpbachman
Drivers and shafts can both contribute to spin. Spin is good, it creates carry through backspin. Side-spin is obviously bad and you can try to counter it through a low spin head or shaft but that will only really be contained through a lesson/swing improvements. I believe that everyone that always looks for low spin heads and shafts when they don't have the swing speed, launch characteristics and backspin for their swingspeed go about it the wrong way. I think there are charts out there from trackman on what your optimal launch conditions are for your swingspeed (i.e. if you swing 90mph, your launch angle should be 16 or 17* with spin around 2500, etc. If you swing 100mph, its around 14* for launch angle with similar or lower backspin). So, if you swing 105mph and are ballooning it at 17* with 3000rpm in backspin, low launch and low spin is what you are looking at. If you are 90mph and getting 9* launch and 1500rpm backspin, you can afford a higher launch/higher spinning driver and combo. Just my .02. +TourSpecGolfer
So today every shaft maker and head maker is claiming low spin, It's all relative to the player's preception of what low spin is compared to driver/shaft setup's they have tested. Higher spin drivers generally help slower swingers gain launch & distance, these are players that do not have the power to put enough spin on the ball to get it launching upward. Lower spin drivers ( again a relative term everyone is now using ) is for those that have the speed to put all sorts of spin on it from right to left to ballooning upward etc.. these players need spin reduction to help keep things straighter. My bad swing mechanics have me in the too much spin camp, I also have a bit of a steep decent on the driver which magnifies this a lot, I can swing 103mph at full blast and 92 mph at my slowest and smoothest the key is the balance somewhere in between but going hard at the ball requires a head like the ZY-11 and a shaft like 7D a custom design to completely null my spin bringing me into the high 2000's range which is still too high for me but useable. If I could get it down to 2200 I would be gaining at least 10 yards but I spent a year trying to fix that and it was the worse golf year of my life so I'll stick with what makes me happy for now and use equipment to help me reach my best. bankbank
michael is spot on. Dont buy into the 'low spin is god' marketing hype. my optimal numbers come from low spin heads / mid-kick shafts. Tried low and low.. didnt work out. Too much trying to 'stay behind the ball' on my drives to get the launch numbers up, consistency went to hell

Ian-500
Trackman numbers for optimal carry: http://golf wrx/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/TrackMan-Page-1.png http://golf wrx/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/TrackMan-Page-2.png Great info. Thanks. Always assumed that spin numbers should be below 2000 for optimum carry and distance, but I guess not...
ARSB
I need an education on this topic. Who benefits from high spin and who benefits from low spin? Is spin product of shaft as well? Can drivers be high spin or low spin bias made by the manufactures? In general fast swing speed player benefit from low spin driver. Spin rate is function of a few factors: driver head, club head speed, launch angle and shaft type Case in point, I just bought a Geotech driver head from Chris and fitted it with an old shaft. I am now launching it lower than the old Xdrive head. The driver head is a low spin head which explain the lower launch angle now. My suggestion is get fitted with an experienced fitter. Your preference of ball flight will then determine the selection on head and shaft. My personal preference is for a lower ball flight.
