Henry
So I am leaning toward purchasing the EGG Driver (looks awesome and has great reviews in forum) which my understanding is 3 degrees open face though it looks square at address. My swing fault is swinging too much on the inside out path which when done will either cause a duck hook or push way to the right. Therefore, if I push one to the right, because the face is 3 degrees open, will that cause the ball to go even further right? I am taking the shaft specs out of this question. RLL33
Not silly at all. I continue to try and understand what the advantage of an open faced driver would be for anyone but the regular hooker (sic...) ;=]
Henry
Thanks RLL. Your question is more to the point. Hoping to get some responses. Edited March 10, 2016 by Henry
RLL33
Me, too. Ultimately I think I may have to just try one to find out. Given the way I feel about all A-Grind stuff, that proto that Chris mentioned a few weeks back seems the most likely candidate. (Is it available yet, Chris...?) supo
well il tell you what I know bec I game this driver the new egg is a normal looking driver, its a normal non weird looking head unlike the older eggs. its failry big head with a big face. but it doesn't look small nor big , it looks its size. it frames the ball really well, the ball looks tiny on the face now heres the kicker. I had a soft stinger in it at first which I miissed left with al the time, I was over cooking this set up a lot. it was really long but wasn't that tight. I swapped that into an epon 101 head which is square and its now perfect. so I swaped to the diaman X 60x in t he egg and now its ballistic. I don't miss it left any longer it draws but they are 5 yard draws now not 20 yard hooks the shaft CAN NOT BE DISCOUNTED. it looks.................. I mean , it looks ever so slightly closed at address. I swear to god it looks closed but aparentrly ............. its not . ive no idea how they did that but heres NO WAY u look down at this and say its open. no way ive adjusted my stance to the right ever so slightly knowing that il be favouring a draw more than anything else with this . it took a wee bit of getting used to but now its wired I absolutely love it. flight is on the mid side . and its feels nice, . the original shaft in it was really quite good. its ( I believe) a diamana made for pr-gr so tis decent quality. IMO if u like the look of the head, id give it a go. and give it a bit of time to acclimatise. I wont get into swing path theories on their relationship to certain clubs bec I don't purport to that ur swing is ur swing, build ur club around that swing or change ur swing. I game drivers that are 3* open and 1* closed and I don't find any difference at all. I just shaft it differently to accomodate that set up . I cant tell you which one is better or worse for a certain swing. ifi like the head I get it and build accordingly. works a treat!
bk24bk
I tend the draw the ball and I still draw the ball with the PRGR Nabla which has a 6* open face I think? And I usually hit the same draw with a Ryoma that has a closed face. My old man hits a slice/fade even with a club that has a ton of offset and a closed face. If you ever see Tour Issue clubs, Taylormade especially, it's amazing how far off the advertised specs these heads are measured at. My point is, I don't know what you are hitting now, but who knows what those specs are. An open face probably won't help a slicer, but it may not be a big deal at all. If you're not going to get professionally fit for the perfect club, and then put the same swing on it every time, it's amazing how much you adapt, or change, on every swing. coops1967
So I am leaning toward purchasing the EGG Driver (looks awesome and has great reviews in forum) which my understanding is 3 degrees open face though it looks square at address. The open face will help reduce the amount of hook - face being open will reduce the difference between the swing path and face angle, which for a hooker will tend to having the face too much closed to the path, So an open face may well help - and also offsets the ridiculous tendency of excessively high lie angles in most/many modern drivers ( the high lie angle also points the face leftward so exacerbating hook tendencies). You could get hold of an old Adams 9015d head cheap to try out open face angles first - almost always with open face angle and 58deg lie... although its performance may end up embarasing many new heads Also psychologically - a hooker of the ball will usually get the heebie jeebies looking down at a closed face head, and worry for the safety of their ankles... an open face looks 'better'.
