A-Grind Fairway Woods!
Great write-up Chris, thank you! I love the matte look on the Modart DS and hope that translates to future woods they have. The A Grind looks great as well!

A-Grind Fairway Woods!
This looks fantastic Chris! Can you do a mini-comparison to Modart on size, feel & performance? Excited to see more pics and hear about the new FW!

Yururi Satin Tataki Blade by Okamura
These look great, I am a huge fan of satin plating and the raw look just makes it that much better! I wish the Forged stamping was less pronounced and the stamping might have been a little more simple (imagine no stamping but Yururi on the muscle instead of the Forged stamp) :) Drool...

No balls about it
Agreed! Go little guy! Love the start-up story :)

No balls about it
Also, a comparison I love to do is grabbing two of the same balls and rubbing them against each other to feel the friction of the coating/cover. You can really tell a difference between surlyn and urethane as well as even different urethane balls and their coating (Vice in this regard feel very sticky which is great, next the new Z Stars followed along by the 330s and ProV1s for me...)

No balls about it
The Pro+ and Pro are their top of the line balls. I think they probably are around 100 and 90 in compression each (Pro+ a four piece and Pro a three piece though it gets out there distance-wise too). Both don't spin a ton on the driver and are good around the greens (no Z Star but better than that off the driver). I don't think there is a ton of good resources or knowledge out there in terms of cover materials, core design, four piece v three piece, compression for your swing, etc. At least the majority of folks I play with use Titleist because everyone else does but they really don't understand that a ProV1/X are pretty high-compression balls (and are scared off of the - say - 330 b/c it says 105mph+ but is typically around the same compression as well). There could be a lot of opportunity in really getting folks to order balls based on the compression they are looking for, 3/4 piece, various core material, etc based on what they want to change with their ball flight (higher/lower, side spin reduction, more spin on greens, softer/harder feel, etc). I would be down grabbing some balls straight from the factory :)

No balls about it
Nob, the pro ball vs retail was a discussion I was just having with a former Korean Pro that plays Volvik. We discussed the difference in compression that he wanted for his s3 compared to retail. Golf Digest has a great spin chart that shows driver vs wedge spin that is helpful, not sure if there is a new one for 2015. I personally enjoyed the Vice balls and always root for the smaller company (ie Modart, etc). I can't say that they are absolutely better than a Z Star XV or 330S (which are my other favorites). The XV longer, the S the only ball I can spin back. Do any of the big 4 share manufacturing centers?

- Cutting a driver shaft to put in a 24* fairway wood
+1, great post. Cutting it down though will obviously reduce the weight and if he did tip a stiff driver shaft, should that make it actually play stiffer? So, what you are looking at is more of a lighter/stiffer shaft in the end though?- Interesting Session with two 7D shafts today
So, I was able to pull my Control shaft from the Modart S head and put it in a DS and took it to the range today. I have to say, the DS is much more my ballgame (deeper face like the D, a tad better feel at that matte finish is fantastic)! The shaft performed better as well (the S just seemed really more fade biased than I would like and the DS a little more square to draw which was fantastic for me). So far, so good, so you can potentially pull these shafts and they are not necessarily one-trick ponies (better for the investment and head worry as well). Though, like everything, it could be hit or miss...- Interesting Session with two 7D shafts today
Let me see what I can do, might not be able to swing August (or another 7D shaft - have 3 driver ones already and going to probably order a FW one too very shortly ;)- Interesting Session with two 7D shafts today
Now I am getting jealous I am not doing all mine in person :) I need to find a business excuse to get out there...- Interesting Session with two 7D shafts today
Very interesting. My mental model was that they used premium materials and process to fit a pre-designed shaft into the head of your choice based on either an in-person fitting or the matrix of questions. Given that they modify their base designs and shaft profiles more than that specifically to your need is even more impressive...- Interesting Session with two 7D shafts today
Interesting, so, I bet if us posted our various 7D specs, we might see some overlap in some specs but maybe EI profiles are slightly tweaked to what we are looking for, etc? I.e. a 7D Distance Shaft in the 60g weight spec in Stiff flex might vary slightly (on purpose) from one person to another, etc?- JBEAM ZY-11 Review
Awesome review Chris, can't wait to hear of others experiences with that head as well! Any large differences in launch or distance compared to the 435 Blackout? Obviously sound and feel will be different as well as forgiveness due to the face setup. I would also (from my experience) put the 435 as a medium launch/low spin head as well?- WTB: Modart fairway woods shafted - S or SR thanks
They both are fantastic off the deck. The Ryoma might be slightly higher launching with a tad more spin and definitely a larger footprint but more shallow face. The Modart is probably a tad shorter in distance but similar forgiveness if you can get over the smaller profile. I think the Modart feels better and is a better all around performer off the tee and deck. I have owned both with the same fairway shaft, so equally fair comparison...- Interesting Session with two 7D shafts today
I have a standard shaft in a Modart D and a control in a Modart S. I have a distance coming with a DS head. I am also reshafting the control with a DS head so I will be able to give you that exact comparison (I didn't get along with the S head and always have been a fan of deeper faced drivers). The control is definitely tighter in profile and tip compared to the standard and will be with the distance...- Interesting Session with two 7D shafts today
I think 7D is definitely special if you travel there any go through their fitting process. Their shafts are also something very rare & unique (through the custom fitting or matrix) considering the material and process used. At the end of the day though, with the matrix, they are fitting you (based on the questionnaire) into their set of pre-designed shafts (some with probably a tighter profile/tip stiffness for control, more balanced with mid-stiffness for standard, more active tip for distance, etc x many shaft weights, etc). At least that is my read of it, so I wouldn't be shocked that some of these shafts would be great for others as well...?- Finally tested! A quick review of the Crazy 435II w/ TJ-46 HK Nero
The Crazy LY01 is a fantastic shaft and with this head, should provide some good lift and feel...
