I am playing a Taylor Made 510TP with a Harmon CB65X. Best driver I have ever played with. Thinking of buying something else for the upcoming season and am considering a Cleveland Comp and a Taylor 580XD TP. Those who have hit either or both please give me your opinion.

Thanks,

Mister 64

I was in the same boat about a month ago. I had the tp w/htd 65 and really liked but I had tp try something else. I got a Comp 9.5 with a GD ys-7. I played it his weekend and tried a couple times at the range. The breakdown is a as follows:

Feel : TP

Forgiveness: Comp

Ballflight: TP

Looks: Tie (slight edge to tp 'cause its smaller)

Distance: tie.

Im going to try the another shaft in the Comp to see if I can get more out of it, otherwise Im going back to the TP.

64 - I'd try them out. Not only those but others too. One thing... If you like the TP don't get rid of it until you are sure... The shaft is just as important as the head.

Why not stick with the 510TP if it's the best driver you've ever hit?

But like FAQ told you, just try different drivers out and make sure you're matching up the right shaft with each and take the one you like best.

Thanks. I will definitely keep the 510TP. I keep all the good ones, which to this point is only two; the TP and the best kept secret out there to me, a Mizuno Blue Rage 310, 8 degrees, Prolite Elite X, 45 1/2 inches. Take that crap Mizuno shaft out of a Blue Rage and put in something decent and it transforms into a bomber! All you budget watchers, go to Ebay and buy a 310 or 350 Blue Rage for $75, slap a YS6 or even and NV65 and hold on.

Mister 64

TM 510TP, Harmon CB65X, 45"

TM Mid TP, 16 degrees

TM Mid TP, 19 degrees

Mizuno MP30, 3-PW, DGS300

Mizuno MP wedges, 52,56

Odyssey 2-ball, center shafted, 33"

Funny you should mention the Blue Rage. Its the driver I had before the TP also. I thought it was the best driver nobody played.

really!!! i have a buddy who was a Mizuno staffer who had the driver, 3, & 5 woods & he hated it, always pulled the 3, actually come to think about it i never saw hit hit that thing, probably cuz he had a bimatrix shaft in the thing :surprize: i guess thats what happens when at the time you have a shaft that only worked for 1 person, Mark Cal! remember all the rage in this shaft when he put it into play about 3years ago? ive actually seen a few of these out on tour in fairways! IMO i would never play 1, had it in an old 975FE & had to have it pulled asap & went back to the x100, but that was 3years ago in an "OL SKOOL" driver which was shweet at the time!

Was looking forward to trying the Comp, but a friend whose opinion I respect told me it was a hook machine, now I'm having second thoughts.

Anyone else have an opinion on this?

i find the comp one of the drivers least likely to hook, even the retail heads are square to open faced model, some guys can hook anything, but the comp is definitely a straight shooter and long and forgiving as well, i find it a bit hollow feeling but no driver is perfect !!!! as far as retail clubs go this thing is a bomber

The same goes for the 580xd tp, it is a very long and straight club, when pured, it is as long as the comp but the comp is going to have a distance avg advantage, they both feel and look about the same...the 580xd is slightly easier for me to square up at address and it is slightly straighter, it does not like to fade or draw, your basic straight shooter !!!

I agree with this. The Comp is super easy to hit w/ a square face. It's possible your friend had one with too soft a shaft. Drivers are personal IMHO, but I never really cared for any TM's.

I want super easy and long. Joe Kwok's magic really added a tremendous amount to this club for me. The shaft and the work that he did on the Comp when he installed the shaft really made this club super special.

I didnt say I was getting rid of my TP Vokester. I still have the Mizuno Blue Rage also and will pull it out from time to time. I have my bag right where I want it at the moment. I just have a little "whoever dies with the most toys wins" stuck in me sometimes and like to try new things. I go to as many demo days as I can. Doesnt mean I wont play the club I hit the best. My game leveled out and stayed consistent when I finally guit monkey'n with my clubs. I have had 5 sets of irons in one season because I wanted a different lie, loft, or shaft. You think because you are a good ball striker that your learning curb is 0 but that is not true. Your clubs are like anything else. You have to get to know them even when you buy the SAME club you aready owned for 2 years. Short of being a pro and having a club maker hand you clubs to your EXACT specs, they are all different. Get clubs fit to your swing and abilities and stick with them for a while, give them a chance, before you jump into the next flavor of the month. How many folks bought a R7TP for above retail price, before they ever laid eyes on one, and are now reading our posts about what a good driver the Cleveland Comp is? THey are scratching their heads no doubt.

There's not a driver on the planet that is $300 better than any driver any of us play that we hit well. Come on now........ :)

What are your thoughts?

totaly agree, i go through clubs like they RANGE balls, sometimes when you get a new wepon is your hands just the excitement of having it makes you hit it better. whatever helps your game do it, & who doesnt want new clubs to play with? your not a HO unless you do.

I agree with Robbie and FAQ. The Comp is far from being a hok machine. Maybe your friend had too soft a shaft in it or dare I dare I say, was swinging bad at that time?

I used to be a TM man all the way had the 510 TP for ever then went to the r7 TP, but then got my hands on the Cleveland Comp. Bye bye TM. The cleveland with the right shaft (for me its the accra SE 80) is the best driver I have ever had. It has changed my game.

what is the launch angle of comp compared to r510TP?

...with the same shaft, the comp is very close to the 510tp...maybe 1/2* lower.

So if I play a 9.5 in 983K, should I play a 10.5 in 510 TP or Comp? Thanks

(Sorry for threadjacking) :o

if you play a 9.5 in the 983k, you probably want a 9.5 510tp and a 10.5 r7 and either a 9.5 or a 10.5 cleveland comp !!!

I have a Comp 460 w/aldila r&d prototype 85XNP and i would say that this is the best driverthat i have ever hit. I have hit them all, tour and retail. My retail 9.5 will be in the bag for a very long time. If you want to hit High flat bombs, The comp is for you!
