Nippon 1150 Question......Please help.

I have played (and LOVED) the Nippon 1150 Stiff flex shafts. They are absolutely awesome, but they were just a little "soft" for me. So I am wanting to move up the the X flex. I have heard there is quite a bit of difference between these flexes. So do you guys recommend "soft stepping" these shafts. Like I said the S flex was slightly to soft, but I don't want to be shocked at how much stiffer the X flex is. Any advise would be great.....THANKS.

Nippon does make a great shaft. They have led the field in developing lightweight shafts that perform way above their weight specs. Reading between the lines of your concerns in your post, I would say you are a "tweener". Between S Flex and X Flex somewhere. The Nippon X flex really falls into the weight class of other manufacturers S Flex (120/121grams). The dispersion pattern also falls neatly in the S Flex range at 1.5*.

Suggestion, move to the X Flex Nippon 1150GH and hit away. Trajectory will be a little lower but the feel will still be there for you, IMO.

So you're saying to NOT soft step, just play them as is?? Just to clarify??

Yep, just play them as is. The X Flex should work just fine right out of the box. If your swing speed is below 100mph then Soft Step them, but I assumed by your Forum name that your swing speed is more in the 110+ range. My swing speed is 107mph and I have hit the Nippon X Flex out of the park and straight with touch.

But right now, I'm hitting the KB Tour shaft in my Epon's and this is the dream team as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks for your help....your right on my SS. Its right at the 108-110 range. It used to be 114, but I aint in my 20's anymore. At 36 years old, 108-110 is much more manageable.

I tried the KB Tours as well, (soft stepped 6.5) but that relationship didn't last long. :tsg_smilie_finger2:

SS of 108-112 here. I had Chris build a set of Muira CB-1006's last year with 1150 X (did not soft step). Perfect flex for my swing...launches slighter higher, but also flatter trajectory. I really like the feel vs. Rifles and True Temper.

May I ask why you didn't like the KB Tours? I've been playing the 1150's x-stiff for a couple of years now and while I do like them very much, I am intrigued by the new KB Tours, especially since next year they will be offering them in a black color which is now offered in their KB wedge shafts. I want to try the KB's but still want to hear more feedback on them.

As far as the 1150's for yourself, I agree with the previous post of just playing them as straight x-flexes. I'm 39 and my swing speed is slightly higher than yours and I'm very happy with the 1150's at the x-flex.

I don't want to turn this into a debate, but I have been playing the KB Tours since early in the year and am on my second set in two different heads. They are stellar. I prefer them to the Nippons. Not that the 1150s are bad, but they always felt a little sloppy to me. The KBS shafts are much more controlled for me and quiet frankly have changed my game.
