OnOff 2011 Forged Irons

I have had these for a few weeks. I decided to try a more game improvement iron for when my swing isn't up to par. I usually play the 2011 Yamaha Tour Irons. The comments here at TSG we pretty convincing to give these a try. They are shafted with the stock NS950 shafts.

Looks - I like the looks. Very clean for a cavity back. The OnOff symbol is pretty cool, but strategically placed in the CB. The tungsten inserts are expertly installed and add a cool look to the sole. At address, the top line is very reasonable and the offset not even cause for alarm. The hell to toe length is longer than the Yamaha irons, but I would expect that to be so. Overall I like the look of the iron and have had no issue switching back and forth between the two sets. The only issue I could see a change is with the bright chrome finish. I like the PW design. SCORE - 4.25/5

Feel - They really shine here. As quality feeling as any other. Feel is subjective however I would classify these as soft feeling with a dash of crispness. Good hits always feel great. Less than perfect hits don't degrade the feel by much. Enough to give good feedback, but not harsh. SCORE - 4.50.5

Trajectory - Not as high as I expected. I was thinking they would take off super high. Not so. Actually a nice medium + launch.SCORE - 4.50/5.

Control - If ease is your thing, then yes they are straight, but workable. I am not an extreme worker of the ball, but I could get as much as I wanted from these.SCORE - 4.5/5

Shafts - The NS950 is staple shaft seen all over. For a reason. It is a nice shaft. Lighter in weight, great feel, very reasonable accuracy and a smoothness only Nippon seems to have. Perfectly playable for me.

Overall Score - 4.5ish

I really have only nice things to say about these irons. These are the first set of non Yamaha Tour irons I have owned since 2007. The design is a great and nice surprise. A forged CB that appeals to the mid HC and better player. I am sure that a scratch player would really enjoy these as do players like the rest of us. It is a truly versatile design and quality iron worthy of strong consideration.

They definitely launch a tad lower than the previous model thanks to slightly less weighting in the sole and the ONOFF symbol in he back which actually raises CG a bit.

nice review Bdog!i was a bit surprised that you got em considering your gamers are playeresque clubs.

i should follow your rationale and game more forgiving clubs as well. nothing worse than gaming players

clubs on a bad day!

those are probably the best onoff irons i have seen after the onoff+.

Hi Bogeydog,

Some advice needed.....were the NSPRO 950 shafts you tested of Stiff Flex? Any idea how the NSPRO 950 shafts compare bewteen regular and stiff flex.......

I have owned the previous Onoff Plus irons ( think they were 2009 model), they were shafted with NSPRO 850 Regular Flex shafts. I sold these but miss them very much......thinking of buying a set of the Onoff Forged 2011 irons.....as I am using mostly irons shafts of 95grams ( NSPRO950 Reg and KBS 90 Regular Flex ) I am thinking whether I should have them installed with NSPRO 950 Regular flex shafts rather than have the stock NSPRO 950 Stiff flex shafts.

The NSPRO 850 R Flex shafts I had were more than easy and friendly to use, but as I normally use 95 gram shafts, I sometimes feel that they are a teeny touch on the lighter tnhan what I am used to.

Any thoughts to share? Anyone?

Thx

The 2011 Forged irons are top notch. As far as the shafts, if you like the 850s in regular then the 950s stiff stiff doesn't seem like the right idea.

For a forgiving players CB the Onoff 247s can't be beat IMHO.

Hi Bogeydog

I agree and thanks for your comments.

I was worried that the Onoff irons with NSPRO850 stock shafts may cause problems, as I played irons with shafts of 90g range, KBS Tour 90 and NSPRO 950 , all Reg flex.

In the end, I treated myself to a set of Yamaha Inpres X V-froged ( 2011 model) 5-Pw, hit them at driving range yesterday, very pleased with the feel at impact, soft yet not mushy, easy to hit with good distance, at least 10 yards more than any of my current iron sets. I am very, very, very happy with the investment. : )

Thank you all for the comments offered.

Thx
