Thanks. In talking to Tario, I told him I was looking for something of an antiqued look, which he passed on to the Master. I love the result every time I look down at it. (What Chris's photo captures is just how beautiful it looks next to the color of a green.) It's also so hand-drawn looking that I'm sure it would always come out looking one-of-a-kind. And the truly amazing thing is how the milling actually improved the roll and touch, which I didn't think was possible with that putter which I had a love affair with anyway. Good luck with yours. I'd look forward to seeing how it turns out.

Rich, I didn't pick up on it at first, but is this not the original burning copper finish from Yamada? this one does look outstanding...is this a special finish done by golds or just a tune up of the original?

When I sent it to Golds, it had the original Yamada Burning Copper finish. But it was pretty dinged up and the milling was worn. Master S did the new milling and it was completely refinished in the antiqued look. Tario negotiated the process for me sending me photos along the way.

Very impressed with that putter. I am drawn to anything copper for some reason. It has me wondering about a copper lefty putter.

thanks mate, that's quite an endorsement coming from the original crafter of that sweet putter.

next time can you ask him if he's ever going to come back and make the custom hand made putters again?

  • 2 weeks later...

Finally got around to getting build phase of this project started. I wasn't sure if I wanted to soft step, but just decided to go straight in with the 6 iron and see how it feels first.

Initial impressions:

By the Beard of Zeus, this thing looks gorgeous! I didn't put the fancy ferrule on yet since I didn't want to waste it in the event that it didn't work great and needed to soft step, but already the head and shaft combo looks exceptional, IMO. At address, its got a great confident look with super minimal offset (if any - offset police, please refer to the pic below and let us know).

The feel of these MR23's are devine, really soft and I'm sure the copper just adds to the softness, but seriously, don't think I've ever hit another club quite like it. Those that have hit everything under the sun and these, please let me know if you agree, but these things are definitely classics with their feel.

I was a little worried about the reported small sweet spot I've read about on these MR23 CB's, but honestly, they're quite nice and pretty forgiving. Doesn't really seem that small to me as off-center strikes had only minimal distance loss, but I was thinking shanks and all kinds of awfulness if not middled. Mind you it was only 1 range session with about 25 balls hit total, but my fears have definitely been put to rest in the forgiveness department.

So far, so good....now to get the rest built =)
