Yeah, I appreciate this, too, Stew. If my back would let me, it inspired me to think about taking a bunch of my wedges out to try some different combos... (PS. I finally had a microdiscectomy (Tiger surgery No.1...) two weeks ago, and the doc says August for me hopefully to return to play... Man, it's a drag being away from the game... but at least the pain seems gone for now...)

Would be even more interesting to see if they could reach in One! <g> On a real note, I found it very cool that JT played so awesomely well when he realized he was out of the running for winning and just decided to go for everything care free. Thanks for that write up, Stew. Sounds like "because I can" would be the winning answer to "why..." Nevertheless, I found it interesting, particularly that he chose to go with screw-in shafts. I've had conversations with a couple of co reps about this. I think it would expand club and shaft sales exponentially if all brands went this route and made it simple for all to experiment.

So how did they feel?

Agree on the 153 being the most consistent driver. Found its way into my bag via the BST one day and it turned out to be the all-time fairway finder for me. Before I hurt my back, I was still throwing the JBeam Black in when I was feeling confident and like bombing them out there. But the 153 kept coming back. Fairways and greens... gotta start with fairways... Oddly, I tried a couple other Epon's, including the newer 155, but it wasn't quite as nice feeling, and the sound wasn't as absolutely sweet. They did something special with the 153.

Have tried MANY, loved only a few. Both the original A-Grind and the CMB have stayed in my bag. Wonderful feel, BIG distance. Other than those, the original Callaway Proto with the screw in the bottom -- which still influences the design of most models that come out -- was the best for me to get the ball up off the turf.

Agree with B, with the caveat that it's all totally personal in addition to what the green and surrounds are telling you. I'd add that anyone who has touch and feel for the short game would almost always benefit from going with the gut after analyzing all of the above, especially if there is any question left after looking everything over. My general rule of thumb: p-wedge for when I want the ball to roll like a putt (especially on a large green), a-wedge for when I want it to roll like a putt after a slight check on the first bounce, s-wedge de-lofted for when I want a bounce-bounce-stop, s-wedge slide it under for when I want to finesse any spin, and l-wedge for a higher traj that needs to stick near where it hits the first time whether we're talking a 3-ft short sider or a 30-ft up to split level green. In addition, p-wedge (or 8-iron) for any kind of bump and run, depending on whether it's collar or rough you're bumping off of. Just IMO after a lifetime of short game practice, play, and love...

Still love the original Miura HB3. Like you, Nobs, I almost never hit a 3-wd anymore. Off the deck, I'll either go for for the Miura hybrid or my 2-iron. I keep the Ryoma 2-wd in the bag, but use it only off the tee.
