Irons

Now lets get done to it - I have a set of 670 Blades, Satin, blueprinted with Project X 6.5s. Great sticks but I want a change - what is out there? I am looking for reviews, comparisons, feelings, divine inspiration, whatever you got.

Irons have 2 big features for me - looks and performance. IMHO you got to have both otherwise you will not be truly happy.

Looks - my ideal iron set have very small heads, absolutely no offset, a thin top line & a rounded off toe. I actually have moved on from the Satin craze, chrome is just as good for me.

Performance - you need forgiveness. Who doesnt? BUT I feel you need feedback just as much. Try hitting blades from 1972 & compare them to any so called "unforgiving" club nowadays. No contest - we got it easy. However I think a mid-high COG is very important to me, I tend to flair my irons when I am playing poorly & that just kills me in the wind/Lahinch. I have never really noticed a huge distance gap in irons provided same shafts/lofts. The longest hitting iron I ever had was strangely the MR-23 CB. It was consistently 15 yards outside my current 3 iron (670) almost hit it as far as my 3 wood at times!

Now - give me your experiences, your wishes, your recommendations! I am thinking we have a lot of choice, but very few REALLY good choices. So far I have the Nikes (still!!) RAC CB and TP CB, Scratch, Z-101s, MP-32s, Srixon Pro-100s but am very easy.

Lets hear it!

in my honest opinion the irons your seeking are the mp 32s. they have everything you ask for with the exception that they do go high.

the feel of them is that expected of mizuno and the forgiveness is awesome. they really do not play like a traditional blade when struck off centre but look as bladey as any other on the market.

apart from those you should look into a set of the mr23 us spec. these are the daddys!!!!

i loved mine untill i got them blueprinted by a dummy! :surprize:

and now they are just poor messed up :wah:

the only other iron i can think of that may be down your street would be the x tours...when they eventually come out. My best friend who plays on the ire team demoed a 6 iron three weeks a go. he said from address they look nothing like a callaway, very small, with a slightly thicker topline. And in usually callaway style they were ROCKETS!!!! :-)

as for your 670s, the only advise i can give you on these is to sell for what ever you can get. as you know i had the exact same set made up, i didnt get on with them and ended up losing a fortune, even tho they were only 2 weeks old!!

Wish I had some divine inspiration for you...or for myself but all I have to share is my experience. Currently play the Hogen Apex and have for the last 3+ years, decided a couple of months back it might be time for a change. Hit a lot of irons, MP32, MP37, MP33, Z-101's, 690mb, Srixon 302's ..all the usual suspects available in the hinterlands of southern Wisconsin..and I have to say there are a lot of really nice irons out there..I really liked the 37's because they didn't get the ball as high as any of the others and let me know when and how I missed...I hit a low ball to begin, learned to play in the midwest with summer wind and before watered fairways..but when it came time to pull the trigger I couldn't do it because I liked the appearance of the Hogans too much...so I packaged them up and shipped them off to be reshafted and blueprinted instead...that's my story and I'm sticking to it..and if pressured will fall back on the old standard..DENY DENY DENY...good luck in your search..

I can´t tell you enough good things about the MP32. Z101 are close, but MP32 are the ticket.

They don´t hit it too low, that´s maybe the only point which you might not like, but with some shaft tinkering, I´m sure you´ll end up with nice sticks. Feel and forgiveness (for a blade) are top notch.

I totally agree with you about the "looks" issue. A bad looking club will never make me happy, even if I would hit all fairways and greens (wouldn´t happen aynway....)

Good luck with your search.

When I read Shoe95 post I just had to post this. Iron play has always been the best part of my game. Maybe because of that, or maybe because I'm stupid I've been through a ton of irons in the last 3 years. Mizzuno Comp EZ, Titleist 762, X16 pro series, Mizzuno MP30 / MP37 combos, and Taylor Made box toes. Anyway I went to a demo day looking for a driver. The last thing I wanted was more irons. But I hit balls at every vendors stall. I finally got to the Hogan guy that I had passed up twice prior. He didn't have drivers and I always grouped Hogans with Topflite Balls. Anyway I started hitting his Edge Pro irons and loved them. One of the things that helped was he properly fit me for the irons first. ( I think this is greatly important) Anyway what I'm trying to share with you in my ramblings are three points. (1.) What you preceive as the most glamorous irons may not be the best for you. (2.) Go somewhere you can demo many irons and keep an open mind. (3.) proper fitting of length and lie is key whatever you get. Finally, as is always the case with all of us "Club Hoes" enjoy your search for your new irons.

I agree with the first response, your begging for a set of mp32's. I just picked up a set and can't wait to try them outdoors, but for now i'm looking outside at a minor snow storm. :surprize:

There are a few to choose from if you really want that good traditional look and feel. I'd have to admit you'd have to include the fxt's in there as well (hogan). they are forgiving and look good. Titleist .cb's as well. I'm not crazy about the mp37's, you gotta be dead on with those imo. I think you would like the mp32's so give them a look soon.

Another vote for the MP32s. Coming from a set of MR23 CBs, the MP32s are even more forgiving for me :surprize:

They hit a lower ball than MR23s but I'm going to switch the DG S300s out for PX 6.0s later as I like the ball flight and the feel of PX then DGs. PXs launch higher but levels off lower than DGs and generates a little more spin for me.

Top line is a little thicker than I like for blades but not overly so. The heads look big but are actually only slightly bigger than the MR23s.

Distancewise, I hit it as long or longer than my MR23s and the feel is just as soft but they also tell you where you missed. Lots of feedback without jarring your hands on every little mis**t.

The only complaint I have on the MP32s is the way the weighting is setup. Mizuno has always designed for a fade, sweetspot is just in front of the hosel. So I really have to work hard to hit a draw which is the shot shape I prefer. But they will hit straight or a nice fade for me easily.

I think these are going to stay in my bag for a while.

MR-23s are sweet - no doubt about it! Alas the grind does not fit me at all, in actual fact its as far away as possible from the grind that I need. I am a picker & they are for super-diggers!

blueprint kinda means what it sounds like! It just ensures all your clubs are 100% to spec & there is no funny lofts/lies etc.

Porsche irons - dont think so!

The main contenders are now:

RAC CB 2004 Miura

RAC CB TP Milled 2005 (but these apparently hit very high)

Nike Blades

Scratch CB or Blades

Hogan FTX

MR-23 US Blade

I have a set of Gauge 2005 M/B's on order, heads being sent directly to Joe Kwok who will blueprint/install Tour Concept shafts. Chris seems to think that these are the most forgiving blades out there right now. We'll see I suppose.

i have never hit the gauge mbs and they look absolutely awesome IMHO and i can see how they would be easier to hit - with the amount of weight low at the back...my friend is headin to japan today so hes gonna see what they look like in person. id just be scared of hitting these tooo high

As a veteran TSG'r you should know the shaft has more effect on trajectory than the head itself  . for example a PGA pro using Cb's lets take P.M and the X-tours, them irons have a lower C.O.G than the GD MB yet have the same trajectory as his Titleist blades. Its all shaft, you want low go PX 6.5 tipped.

I play the MB's in Hawaii's strong winds and low is the only way to go here.

The GD MB's have strong lofts so there is another reason why your ball should not fly high.

I understand very well your design & appearance preferences. I have played blades for virtually all my 40 years of golf...the early blades were demanding. I am currently playing a set of Scratch Classics which have the small head, little offset, thin topline I desire. I just placed a custom set of MP32's for sale. Despite the set up of the MP32's to my specs and delofts in the PW through the 6 to avoid the balloons, they still launched too high. Also, the head size is enormous compared to my Scratch Classics; I do not like the shape of the MP32 lofted clubs...too large and with thick top lines. I am giving serious thought to Blade Golf's offer with the Tour Concept shafts and getting my blade grind and head size. I am convinced off the rack clubs may partially satisfy your desires, but custom forging and grinding via Scratch or Blade Golf is the way to go for those of us who know and demand their desired specs and are willing to pay the price.

I have hit Jeff's personal set of Scratch Classics. They are amazing! So pure and just the most amazin feel. I actually ended up with a set of Nike Blades, they are pretty much what I want in an iron & the grind happens to suit me perfectly! and these happen to be Tour and Miura!!!

I have come very close to going with the Nike blades; they are similar to my Scratch Classics. With Miura forgings they must be outstanding! It may be difficult to improve that set. Good luck.
