Epon Copper Wedges--Custom Grinds

So I buy a set of 52* and 58* copper Epons from 808hack on B/S/T. I've already got the J's, think they may be about the best I've ever had, so I'm excited to try the wedges. Box comes, and what a surprise!!!

First of all, pictures don't describe how good looking these wedges are. The color and the shape are like miniature works of art. Fit and finish, even down to the copper color of the Epon proprietary ferrule, are first class and unlike I've seen on even the finest clubs. But now the surprise!

The 52* has a heel/trailing edge grind and the 58* has an "M" grind that are perfectly ground and look like someone spent hours and a lot of money to accomplish. When I mentioned to 808 that he hadn't told me about the grinding, he says "Oh, yeah, guy named Calvin Matsui here in Hawaii ground those--he's done a little work for Gauge Design". Well, the grinds are done as well as any I've seen and what a great surprise. Two incredible wedges with fantastic grinds.

Now, having said all that, going to play with them for the first time in about an hour. If there as good as I think they'll be, there in the bag for quite a while. If not, tune into BST for your chance to own two great looking wedges ground by a master!!!!!

hehe, yah all those clubs were mine, well before i sold them to 808hack. carlton masui did those grinds for me, also known as TBC or "tuned by carl". and just to let you know that i polished/light sanded off the chemical purple on the wedges also, they dont normally look like that, they now have more of a copper look. enjoy the clubs! (i miss them already)

I thought those might have been yours! I remember you describing them in earlier posts.

I am glad they landed in your hands G. That means I'll probably have a shot at them.

Hope you get back in the saddle again soon. Being bionic must have some advantages?

Back already, too cold and wet to play but a few holes! Hit the 58* once (range was closed), and had a good result. Strange, the heads seem a little closed at address and felt like I needed to manipulate it open. We'll see as I get a little more time with them.

Yah, Duke, surgery on the 30th, and with two fake hips watch out. I'll be whipping through the ball as fast as Tiger.

And yes, sooner or later you'll get a shot at these wedges--you know you will, and sadly it doesn't matter how well they perform. After all, there could be something better out there that I've never played!!

His name is Carlton Masui from ParGolf72 he does many of the wedge grinds for the top players in Hawaii.

Grinding the Type Js a tad is possible because the heads are heavy, in regards to the wedges which are average weight if you remove more than 10g and add that to the hosel with brass tip weights you will move the CG 1/64th of an inch toward the heel. So it all depends how much is taken off the wedge.

Carlton and I have a suprise for you guys coming soon.

Oh this is something I really need to hear....experience has shown that when Mr. Chris leaks a piece of info like this it means he has something exceptionally attractive in the works which results in a raising of my blood pressure, increased sweating of my palms, and the urge to dump money into paypal account. Sigh, I guess I should be used to it by now but it still sets me on pins and needles in anticipation.

I sense the TSG wedge with some really excellent grinding.

Played with the wedges today and OMG, great feel on every kind of shot imaginable. Thanks to the grinding, the 58 was money out of some wet fairways, and the 52 really great for greenside chips. And, about 30 guys walked up to the bag to see what these great looking copper things are. Will give a more detailed review in a couple of days.

I'm a fan!

That's good stuff. And here I thought the TSG grips were the ant's pants. What's the benefit of the "dimple" in the sole of a wedge?

G, it's sounding like you've become and Epon man. How are you liking the irons and driver? Will they last to the summer? :tsg_smiley_heart:

Irons and wedges firmly in the bag. The driver, unfortunately, has moved on to its new rightful owner. Strange but true, I can't find anything (and those who know me know I've tried) that is hotter for me than a retail G2 Ping with a 757 in it. Any ideas--for me it wasn't the Epon with the Code 6? Absolutely one of the best looking drivers I've ever seen and the craftsmanship is superb. But...........more yards, not for me. All suggestions welcomed and appreciated.

Yea G,

I would say tinker more with shaft and specs than heads, todays drivers are all pretty much maxed out in technology. I think it was a mistake to sell the epon when perhaps another shaft could have set things up better than ever.

Ozik tends to give a lower tight flight and is not known to add any extra distance.

How did it go for you in TSgirls fitting threads?

I think G needs to try an Epon w/ a low kicking Axiv combo....

Funny that you mention it, but I've got a 405 TourStage with an Axiv 6064 SR Mid Kick that I kinda like. Shaft has potential. A 10.5* Epon with the same shaft but with a Low Kick is on it's way to me for use next week. Going to give it a try.

Re Chris' idea that I should have kept the head and switched shafts, just can't do that. Bad karma. Head and shaft are a unit and if you split them up, well, need I say more. Rather start all over. That's why PayPal was created. I think I'm about to go through another Japanese phase--which is a kick because the stuff is just so gorgeous.

Chris, further to the previous, could you advise what exactly has been done to the wedge in the photograph.

It looks to me like:

1) P grind ie concave sole

2) Heel relief

3) Toe relief

4) Some grinding to take off some of the weight on the back bottom portion of the wedge

5) It has been refinished in something? ie not the original chrome.

Once again C has done a great job on that old Cleveland!!

carlton masui is responsible for the grinding. and what you said is pretty much what it had done to it. the interesting thing about this one is the muscle on the back of the club has been ground down. spectacular work! and i believe it was left raw or it was gun blued.
