Shankopotamus
Hi, gang. Haven't been on the the course or in these forums for quite a while due to an injury. But I'm feeling better now and it's time to get back into the swing of the things...pun sort of intended there. The first question I have upon my return has probably been asked at least once over the years, but I'm going to ask it again... I usually play the same shaft in my driver and 3 wood for feel purposes. However, I'd like to start practicing with a heavier version of the same shaft in my 3 wood. For example, let's say I was playing Ad DI 6sr in both driver and 3w, but wanted to go with 6sr in my driver and a heavier 7s in my 3w. If I left the 7s untipped into my 3w, would it play softer than the stiff flex it was intended to play? If so, how much softer do you think? I'm asking b/c I don't normally use stiff flex shafts, but some manufacturers and their shafts, like the example given above, don't make their heavier shafts in weaker flexes, like R or even SR. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks, Shank
daamartin
Absolutely yes. Have done that several times with x flex shafts in 3w. Works well.
Shankopotamus
Does your X flex feel like it's a whole flex weaker, like an S flex, or somewhere in between? Edited December 14, 2014 by Shankopotamus
daamartin
Softer but tighter. Just a bit more give in the tip, but nice straight flight. My bad shot with 3w is left, so going x flex untipped really works for me. Hope this helps!

+TourSpecGolfer
I've done this many times myself and a few times on accident. Softer, Higher, Wider Dispersion is what I noticed.
supo
depends on your head weight. an incresed shaft weight will decrese ur swing weight. makes a 65 weight 43.25 inch 3w from d2 to c9 at 43 inch with heavier 70g shaft ***APPROX**** ive had this done a tousand times. u might need a tip weight which will make the tendencay for the club to pull r **left** ever so slightyl. and make the ball fligh lower. if this doesnt matter . cool so if u go this route get a mid/ high flighted driver shaft and u shud be spot on, makes the fligh very straight thats what i do its pretty darn good Edited December 18, 2014 by supo67
Shankopotamus
Thanks for your input, guys. I certainly appreciate being able to get advice like this through the TSG forums. I'm sure all of us have gone the traditional route of tipping 46" driver shafts for our FW, but have any of you tried using dedicated fairway wood shafts, like the TRPX 1st Msg FW? If so, how did it work out for you?
daamartin
I am doing this experiment right now, comparing a Crazy Red 80 7.4 (untipped) in a G-Field GF-FW versus a Crazy FW-80 7.4 in a JP Callaway X-Hot Pro head. Both good. Crazy Red setup is tighter and heavier, but goes lower. When I catch it the FW-80 setup is longer, but not as easy to control and get on starting line. Perhaps needs a heavier head? My previous gamer, which I don't quite have the swing speed for anymore, is an untipped Accra SE80* (M5 or x) in Yamaha InpresX 14*. Irreplacable over about 6 years! So there you go - you just gotta try stuff!
robbie
this pretty much depends on the shaft......the lighter shafts such as speeder 6.3, i notice the tipping and on heavier shafts such as my speeder 8.3, a half inch won't change the feel or flight substantially......another factor to consider is where you are on the shaft, if you are maxing out your flex such as loading it 100% then you will notice a slightly lower ball flight and a tighter dispersion, however if you are sweeping/casting at the ball with very little lag, then it won't be as noticeable. In general, i do not tip my 3 woods because i need them to get up in the air and i value carry over roll....if i need to keep the ball down, ill hood my 3 iron. * The tourAD 6 and 7 play differently with the 6 being much more friendly while the 7 is more control....
