chuck4golf
I am close to the end of my ho'ing days. I am really trying to zero in on classic examples of 3 types of irons that can last - GI, players CB and blades. For example, my Macgregor 1025M blades are complete icons in my eye, and the Epon 503's are close enough to icons in the GI category. (Although wide soles pretty much always turn me off). The last set missing is the players cavity. I just sold some Miuras and Yamahas that neither were strong enough. The best in my personal experience was some Mizuno MP59's. I have been thinking about Epon 302 and Honma tw727 vn. I don't care how new or old the club is, and I don't care if they are inexpensive or costly. This set will be the centerpiece of my irons. I want something that looks great, feels great and has moderate help on slight mis**ts. This crowd here has bought and sold enough players CBs over the years to stock a warehouse. Everyone of us has sold clubs that we regret. What are especially some players CB's you've had that really make the grade in your mind as 'classic' - the kind you'd actually choose if you had to live with it long term? Thx, Chuck
Swizbeatz
302 for me
chiromikey
I'm not a big CB player but my 302s and PRGR iD BLs will never leave my stable.
robbie
i would vote 302s or the
Ian-500
Which Yamahas did you get rid of? Yamaha was my first foray into this mad world of jdm, so the tour models are what I would call a classic cb. Looks wise I think the PRGR TR500 is stunning, and I'm hoping that its baby brother the iD BL will just as stunning. Possibly a future classic too :)
Ian-500
OnOff too.......their 2013 forged cb is an awesome set of irons
chuck4golf
Last year's Yam tour cb's. They had been refinished and somehow my love affair with this look died. I liked the shape, feel and performance pretty well. But I was never really excited to be playing them. I don't know much at all about PRGR. I don't think I have ever seen this brand in person. chiromikey
Ian is right, the TR-500s are stunning. I don't know if they can play better than the ID BLs but the do look better. Chuck, think of the ID BLs as a 302 without the offset. That's how absolutely good they are! Edited November 17, 2015 by chiromikey
nobmontana
Players CB is the sweet spot for me. Have played MBs a few times, but have come back to players CBs where I feel more at home. I am currently gaming Mizuno MP-62s I got mine copper plated and upgraded with Crazy STP shafts. That's how much I love them. Players CBs in my opinion must be compact, have narrow sole, have less offset. I would gladly play any of the following players CBs Mizuno MP-63 Bridgestone J36 CB Yonex NanoV Nextage Forged Tours Fourteen TC-888 Titleist CBs ( 710, 712, 714, 716 )

Mob
love my Epon AF-302's. I can't imagine ever getting rid of them.
Mjr. D
I'm doing the same thing. Selling everything and keeping three sets. Blades - Miura MB-5003 for their ultra thin top-line and incredible pure, dense feel. Epon 302s because when struck pure nothing I've ever used beats them and probably going to keep my 2011 Onoff Forged or buy the new Onoff Kuros for a more forgiving option. Feel like this is the best combo of irons out there (for me).
cuistot
My first set of JDM irons are the recently acquired PRGR TR500. I have to say they truly are special; just know they are so soft. I am waiting on custom fit leather covers to keep them safe. I have heard others speak of these as a hybrid MB-CB which is what is so attractive to me. I am looking around for a second set of CB and have strong attraction to the ID-BL if I can find a deal. Good luck in your search. Oh yeH the A-Grind R1 CB look fine but haven't heard much buzz about them yet.
supo
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, good topic! prob one of of this lot for me prgr tr500 or idbl Yamaha NON tour 2009, yup. I went thru every set and after much thought these were the best all rounders I found
chuck4golf
How do the prgr look in the bag? Hate to admit it, but this matters to me. A club says something about me, it's kind of a self-expression. If these look ... right ... then I really like that they are under the radar. Sort of a private statement. I keep noticing how much love these get from people so I've been looking here and on ebay to see pics. How do you guys like their 'curb appeal?' cuistot
What about Taylormade R9 or the Callaway Prototype "4 dot"
Haovictor
What about Taylormade R9 or the Callaway Prototype "4 dot" I will vote for R9. I don't know who forged them, but as good as Endo. ( Maybe they forged by Endo though.)
supo
yup they are great irons but id not keep them over the ones I listed. the idbl bec they have the elast offset of any club ive found. the tr500 bec the look is off the charts. the Yamaha forged bec they are the best /easiest . great feel clubs of all of them. the quad dots in lusher conditions are just rediculous. if they had slightly smaller shape and a hair slee offset these wud definatly be tough to top. the TM r9s are all rounders don't matter on what lie, they are just great. . feel ls like endo and mizuno together combined, endo might have done these they didn't say no,, they didn't say yes either. they said sorry we cant discuss our customers. but for the price differnential and the fact they are JAPAN reelase ltd ed . only well someone one here must have done them or they wudda been t he same price as the rest of the dross that company relseases every 30 minutes..OOOOPs seconds. whoever did them did a heck of a job anyway. saying all this id not keep any of these over my masda MBs tho. regardless of how good he yare ,the masdas are better for my eye. answering another question about bag looks ,if u don't mind a hair more offset then the tr500s shud be the club u go to over the idls. the idbl are the better club. no doubt there. but its by a margin that is insignificant. and the look of the tr500s cant be topped. chuck4golf
Haha. So I am thinking prgr tr500 and then thinking, 'and the price on tsg for these just went up!" TM.... shocked to them in this list. Their recent approach (3-5 yrs) dropped them off my radar completely.
chuck4golf
I also think that the Honma's vn's are a classic in the making but no one has played them. I hit them at a local store in LA a few months ago and really liked them. I had very seriously considered a blended set with M/VN but decided that this last set of the trio should be all cb... This is the thing with me. A club sends me a very clear image of what is about to happen. With my 503's, I get the feel of 'hit it long.' With the Mac blades, I get a 'hit it precise' feel. I am 2 clubs longer/shorter between these two sets and it's not all loft. I actually hit the blades closer to my target than the 503s but the misses are worse. So the thing a great set of players CB's convey is 'get it close,' and that's what an iron is for. If today was decision day, it would be between TR500 and vn's. But I am going to chew on this a while. And once these are set, the next is the shaft - the heart of the club. The problem with all these great jdm heads is you can't test them with shafts. No solving that, I guess.
supo
the TM tp r9 were designed by SIr Nick Faldo and released only in japan, with no reference to rocket-balllzzz-launching-zstarx-factor X- orange-racing stripe- faster-than-a-speeding-bullet-longest-club -ever -made -till now.... and now.. and NOW) , nope they are just GREAT irons
