Hutch
I’ve been using all sorts of drivers over the last couple of years… old school. Mid school. New school, trying heaps of different set ups. New drivers older shafts, older drivers new shafts blady bla….. I’ve had some very good combos on this journey. Surprise’s, let-downs….. Some that have blown me away on how different they can perform just by changing the shaft etc…Some others that offered nothing but consistency good or bad no mater what shaft or set up. But I think I finally nailed a top 5 with a sixth in play to see if it can knock one out. I will mark them out of 5 in different categories with a brief description. Most numbers will obviously be high as they made the top 5....So I will be splitting hairs, but its the small differences that make them very distinctive along with the feel of the branding and looks. #1 Yamaha 4.6 RPM 10*….TRPX Aura S 45” Feel - 4 Sound - 4 Distance - 4 Dispersion - 4 Look at address - 5 This one is in my top 3. Probably one of the most enjoyable out of the 5. Mid flight baby fades are its speciality. Edited February 21, 2022 by hutchy
nobmontana
Very very good head this one. I had three RPM heads at one point. 2 x 9 deg.... and a 10 deg... the 9 deg were so low launch I had to be very careful with the shaft selection. At the end 10 deg for me was the winner! I had the same experience. The 9* was to much of a low launch monster for me. 10* hits the sweet spot. I have just added some comments on the performance which I will add on every driver. dickyfowler
I had a Yamaha about 5 or 6 years back and liked it. I buy new drivers every year - my favorites these days must be CARBON FIBRE loaded....love that softer/mushier feel/sound. And I am liking the new Kinetixx shafts - found that lighter shafts with some good kick really suit me. But it is all very much individual...so who cares what I like. I just buy lots of expensive stuff and end up with clubs all over the place.

One might have crept in to my top 5. Sound and feel, the RPM 4.6 is very distinct.
DMG
Can't comment on the Yammy head... but the one TRPX shaft I have (which came from you mate 😉 ) is really good! It's the S flex Xanadu matched with the Crazy CRZ-435 Limited Edition head. I'm toying with the idea of pulling it and matching it with a PING G425 LST. That was a great combo mate and just outside my top 5. That experiment has been done with the Ping Xanadu........ Crazy CRZ limited with the Xanadu was better. 😉
DMG
Better on centre strikes I have no doubt... but I'm finding the PING heads to be some of the most forgiving I've ever hit, even the LST models... and I need all the forgiveness I can get with my 21 HC! 😉

dickyfowler
Ping is getting good reviews for the latest drivers - my little issue with them is the lumps on the crown...their Turbulators. I know they are there for a reason (better at cutting through the wind etc) but I just find them unappealing to my eye. So I don't buy them.... Would consider doing so in the future if they sex them up...
parputt
Hutch I know all shafts feel different and feel is subjective but what US shaft(ie not japan only) would feel and play like your Aura
Hutch
Good question mate but one I can’t answer. Just too many good JDM shafts. I haven’t used a U.S. shaft for a long time. I can say the Aura plays true to flex with a smooth feel, but a shaft that holds up when you step on it. Feels very active through the impact zone, but is definitely one of the most stable shafts in the TRPX lineup. Lower spin which suits the older Yamaha head. To summarise. Strong, lively but stable. Nice shaft.
parputt
Thats a nice interpretation of it thanks.!! I was looking at this or the Messenger.
Hutch
Never used the Messenger but hear it’s stout. If you like 70g shafts the Phantom is a great shaft.
Hutch
#2 Epon Technica 380 10*….Fire Express Max WBQ 65 S 45” Feel - 5 Sound - 3 Distance - 4 Dispersion - 3 Look at address - 5 Most fun of my top 5, better than the T388 for me. Highly workable. Loves a high draw. Edited February 23, 2022 by hutchy
DMG
Nice Hutchy. Interested in the sound score... bit tinny?
Hutch
Yep that's exactly it Dave. Feel is very Epon but higher pitched sound. Sound is part of feel I believe but in this case the 2 are definitely not related. Maybe its what we have tuned ourselves in to with modern drivers that makes it stand out with a different pitch. nobmontana
The Max WBQ shaft is Money!!! Played that shaft for a while in a P-Tune driver. Those were the good old days for me when I could carry 265 yds... Sigh...

I always have a couple of them laying around for something new. For me, this shaft is the std I judge everything else by.
nobmontana
Agreed. It's like a Diamana Blueboard for Compo Techno. My equivalent would be the Kurokage Proto 2013. When it doubt I always go back to it.
Hutch
#3 Kamui Pro TP 7 V 3…Fire Express RB 6 S Feel - 3 Sound - 3 Distance - 5 Dispersion - 4 Look at address - 4 Gets in by default. This is my go to if I’m between drivers, don’t have anything made up or feeling a bit stiff…Super reliable. Super long. Sound and feel are not as good as Epon Yamaha but not much is…... For that reason this would be first out of the top 5. I go to a mid high fade with one. RB shaft has very nice smooth feel and loves a sweeping non aggressive transition swing. bngolfer
I had the Kamui back in the day. Liked the look from address, loved the deep face. Never could get it to fly though. Don't get it. Have you tried the Epon 460ZR (with red on bottom)? Had it with a Matrix F7M2 LTD for years. That is the best feeling driver I've ever played, along with the Yamaha 201V Tourmodel with a purple Kiyoshi. Funny - Epon and Yamaha up there for me too. Hutch
Yeh it was always a back of the closest driver. Was never really impressed by it either till recently. It always got 1 maybe 2 rounds max over the years, then back in the closet….Needed something smooth and easy on the body recently. Then it was bingo!…. I get it. This combo loves a smooth out to in upright swing. As long as the previous 2 but easy to get there. Did you mean the 460 COR Titan.? This one? if so, this should have made the top 5 easy but sold the shaft that was the best for it a while back regrettably. Crazy Hot Black with this was a great combo. Current shaft is a no go. Have a Crazy TJ 46 Noir incoming, one of my favourite shafts. if you mean the ZR 420 460. Yes I’m with you. Those things are probably the softest face drivers I ever used also. Very unique feeling. One you don’t forget. Ive listed the Kamui for sale. I think this one with the noir will get some game time. Ian-500
For me the Epon ZR415 was a superb feeling head. Had that shafted with a blueboard.
